Wakayama offers a range of ways to shape a trip: a castle in the city center, a zoo on its grounds, a theme park with a Mediterranean-inspired harbor world, and a tidal flat in the south of the city. These places represent different sides of a stay, from history and urban experiences to nature and entertainment. For families, this provides a useful selection of ideas, without promising that every outing will be the same kind of day: you can treat culture, exploring a theme park, and visiting the tidal flat as separate highlights.

Wakayama Castle: history on Mount Torafusu

Wakayama Castle rises in the city center on the summit of Mount Torafusu. Its white, three-story main tower gives the complex a distinctive appearance. The castle is also connected with the history of the Tokugawa family of Kishu: it served as the family’s residence. A visit thus brings together a clearly recognizable architectural style and the historic role of the site.

There is also a zoo on the castle grounds. When traveling with children, you can therefore consider both the castle and the zoo as possible interests when planning your trip. The two attractions are on the same grounds, but offer different reasons to visit: the castle and family history on one hand, animals on the other. This makes it easy to give the outing a different emphasis depending on whether the architecture and history or the zoo visit appeals more.

Porto Europa: a Mediterranean harbor world

Porto Europa is located on Wakayama Marina City and is modeled on a medieval Mediterranean harbor town. The amusement area has 24 attractions. This makes Porto Europa different from the castle and tidal flat: the focus is on an elaborately designed themed environment.

Families can include Porto Europa in their travel plans as an outing focused on a theme park. If you are coordinating different interests within your group, you can consider this place as a separate option alongside Wakayama’s cultural and scenic experiences.

Wakanoura: tidal flat in the south of the city

The Wakanoura tidal flat stretches across the south of Wakayama at the mouth of the Wakagawa River. It provides a distinct natural counterpoint to the built attractions and themed experiences. If you are especially interested in a waterside landscape, you can treat Wakanoura as a highlight in its own right and plan your visit differently from an outing to the castle or Porto Europa.

Buses run to the Furobashi stop from JR Wakayama Station and Nankai Wakayamashi Station. From there, it is only a short walk to the tidal flat. This information can help when choosing how to get there and planning your day: you can check which of the two stations is relevant to your trip and take the bus to Furobashi into account. You can base your search for a holiday apartment on which attractions you plan to visit and how you would like to get to them—without assuming that an attraction’s location indicates where accommodation is located.
