The city of Tochigi brings together two different travel interests: the history of a trading town on a historic post road and natural scenery ranging from blossoms and autumn leaves to misty mountains and wetlands. These experiences can all be found within the city of Tochigi. The contrast can help you plan your trip: you can focus more on cultural history or on landscapes and the seasons.

Trade History Along the Road and River

During the Edo period, Tochigi flourished as a post station on the 日光例幣使街道 and as a merchant town whose prosperity was also shaped by river transport to Edo. In recognition of this role, the city was called „商都北関東“ („the trading metropolis of northern Kantō“). The name refers to a time when road trade and river shipping together contributed to the town’s economic importance.

Shipping on the 巴波川 is said to have begun in 1617. At that time, during the transfer of 徳川家康 from 久能山 to 日光山, official cargo was among the items unloaded at 栃木河岸. This date gives the river’s history a specific historical connection and adds to the picture of Tochigi as a trading town.

Traces of this trading history also shape the streetscape: the historic 日光例幣使街道 runs partly along today’s 大通り and 嘉右衛門町通り. Black merchant storehouses and groups of white-walled storehouses have been preserved on both sides. These surviving buildings make the difference between a historic trading street and a mere label on a map tangible.

Individual buildings also tell the story of this past. The Meiji-era storehouses and five other buildings belonging to 油伝味噌 are registered as tangible cultural properties of Japan. A period trading counter has also been recreated in the historic building of the 横山郷土館. This detail draws attention to trade as a specific everyday activity, rather than only to the major routes along which goods moved between towns.

Seasons and Views at 太平山

太平山県立自然公園 is located in the centre of the city of Tochigi, covers 1,079 hectares, and was designated in March 1955. 太平山, also in the city centre, is known for the hydrangeas along あじさい坂, cherry blossoms in spring, and autumn leaves. Different scenery comes to the fore depending on your interests: blossoms, spring cherry blossoms, or the colours of autumn.

Near the summit, 謙信平 offers views across the Kantō Plain. The striking sight of the mountains below floating in mist also has its own name: it is called „陸の松島“ („Matsushima of the Inland“). The expansive view across the plain and the image of mist-covered mountains describe two different aspects of the same vista.

A long approach with about 1,000 stone steps leads to 太平山神社. This number gives you a concrete idea of the length of the approach without requiring an estimated walking time. The different landscape features can also help with your planning: at 太平山, seasonal blossoms and autumn leaves accompany the views from 謙信平.

Another natural area lies in the Fujioka district within the city of Tochigi: the Ramsar wetland 渡良瀬遊水地 is located mainly there and provides a habitat for various waterbirds and other plants and animals. Its focus differs from the viewpoints at 太平山: here, the emphasis is on a wetland as a habitat, while there it is on elevated views and seasonal scenery.

Choose the Focus of Your Trip

These differences can help you choose a holiday rental without having to squeeze every experience into a single itinerary. If you are particularly interested in historic trading towns, the post station, river shipping, and surviving storehouses form a connected theme. If you would rather compare different kinds of natural scenery, the seasonal sights at 太平山, the view from 謙信平, and the wetland 渡良瀬遊水地 cater to different interests.
