Izunokuni offers a variety of reasons to visit: a hilltop castle associated with the history of the Hōjō clan, exhibitions on Japan’s modernization, cycling along the Kano River, and a summit panorama overlooking Suruga Bay and Mount Fuji. There are also seasonal strawberry-picking experiences and a traditional event held on a set date each year. When choosing your destination, consider whether you want to focus mainly on history, outdoor activities, views, or a special event.

Following in the Footsteps of the Hōjō

Nirayama Castle is a hilltop castle built by Hōjō Sōun. It served as his permanent residence until his death. The castle’s history can thus be linked to a specific person: Hōjō Sōun lived permanently in the complex he had built. Ganjoujuin is also associated with the Hōjō clan. Hōjō Tokimasa had the temple built as the clan’s family temple. If you are interested in historic sites and family history, you can include these two distinct connections in your exploration of Izunokuni.

Another historical highlight is the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace. The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace Guidance Center presents its history and significance, as well as its role in Japan’s modernization. It features elaborate video presentations and exhibitions that incorporate the latest research findings. This makes the center a distinct point of interest for anyone who wants to learn about a technical structure and its significance for Japan’s modernization, in addition to historic buildings, during their trip.

River, Cycling Route and Views

You can enjoy a leisurely bike ride along the Kano River cycling route while taking in views of Shiroyama. The route combines exercise with views of this striking landmark. If you like to combine activity and scenery when planning a trip, this is a specific reason to experience Izunokuni from the perspective of a cycling tour.

From the summit of Mount Katsuragi, you can enjoy a different view: a 360-degree panorama stretching across Suruga Bay and Mount Fuji. The view differs from the one of Shiroyama as you cycle along the Kano River. If expansive panoramas are important to you, the summit can be a focus when deciding on your trip; cycling and scenic views are different experiences to choose between.

There is also an activity on the water: you can enjoy river kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on a gentle-flowing route toward Mount Fuji throughout the year, by reservation. The year-round availability and the need to book are important details to consider when planning. This experience can be considered an alternative to a cycling tour or an outing focused on history and exhibitions.

Seasonal Experiences and an Annual Event

Strawberry-picking experiences are offered in Izunokuni from mid-December to early May. If you would like to include strawberry picking in your trip, plan your travel dates within this stated period. This makes it different from a visit focused on Hōjō history, panoramic views, or water activities: here, the season itself is an essential part of the planning.

One specific annual date is Kawakanjō: this traditional event takes place every year on August 1. A raft fitted with a torch is sent down the Kano River. If this event is important to your trip, you can use August 1 as a fixed point of reference. Strawberry-picking experiences and Kawakanjō therefore offer different time windows to weigh when choosing your travel dates.
