The seasons bring different highlights to Ageo: cherry blossoms in spring, summer festivals with processions, and winter illuminations shape different times to visit. Ageo is also home to a historic shrine and a biotope along the Arakawa River. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, consider whether you’re more interested in festivals, nature watching, or history in Ageo.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Every year, the Ageo Sakura Festival is held at Ageo Maruyama Park and the cultural center, where visitors enjoy the cherry blossoms. The Ageo Iris Festival is also part of the annual calendar: it takes place each year around May to June at the water garden pond in the park and attracts visitors from the city and beyond. If you plan to visit specifically for one of the flower festivals, check the dates for that year in advance.

The Ageo Summer Festival runs for two days around July 15. The celebrations take place mainly around JR Ageo Station and along the Nakasendo; the program includes festival float parades and mikoshi processions. Another summer festival in Ageo is Hirakata Doroinkyo in the Kamijuku district of Hirakata. It is also known as “Tenno-sama”; the prayers are for protection against epidemics and other misfortunes. In 2011, the event was designated an intangible folk cultural property of Saitama Prefecture under the name “平方祇園祭のどろいんきょ行事”.

Shrine and History Along the Nakasendo

The Hikawa-Kuwa Shrine served as the guardian shrine of Ageo-shuku. Its wooded grounds offer a peaceful setting and are about 200 meters from Ageo Station. The grounds contain the municipally designated monuments “上尾郷二賢堂碑記” and “雲室上人生祠碑頌”. They mark the site of a former local school from the Edo period.

Ageo also has a historic connection to the Nakasendo: during the Edo period, it was the fifth of 69 post stations along this route. Together with the former guardian shrine and the site of the former school, this offers a historical perspective quite distinct from the seasonal festivals.

Park and Habitats Along the Arakawa

Ageo Maruyama Park brings together several different attractions in one location. Its facilities include a small-animal area, a children’s playground, a barbecue area, a nature learning center, and a large pond. The water garden pond is also the venue for the Ageo Iris Festival. The park therefore offers groups with varied interests several ways to spend their time, from nature-focused activities to recreation.

The Mitsumata-numa Biotope in the Arakawa River floodplain is a distinct natural area in Ageo. Aquatic and wetland plants grow there, and it is also home to various birds and dragonflies. Rare plants include violets, Mikuri, エキサイゼリ, and ハナムグラ. These species give the biotope a character distinct from the city’s parks and festivals.

Choosing When to Visit and Where to Stay

In winter, illuminations around JR Ageo and Kita-Ageo stations brighten the surroundings. Together with the cherry blossoms, iris festival, and summer festivals, they create a clear cycle of seasonal highlights. The time of your trip is therefore a useful starting point when choosing a vacation rental: consider whether you’d like to plan your days around festival dates, nature, or historic sites.

If you plan to use the “ぐるっとくん” city bus, check the current timetable before setting out. The listed route for the “ぐるっとくん” city bus from the west exit of Ageo Station includes the Nature Learning Center and the south entrance to Maruyama Park as stops in Ageo. This lets you plan your journey to these destinations using the departure times that apply to your travel dates.
