Nakijin offers several clear reasons to visit: a historic castle, traces of traditional settlements and coastlines with varied landscapes. When looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether castle and village history, water activities or beach time should shape your stay. This gives you a practical starting point for choosing a location based on your interests.

Nakijin Castle and Village History

The historic ruins of Nakijin Castle are a gusuku on the Motobu Peninsula in the north of Okinawa Island. The castle, also known as Hokuzan Castle, was the seat of the King of Hokuzan before the Ryukyu Kingdom was unified, during the era of the Three Kingdoms. After that, it served as the residence of an overseer appointed by the Ryukyu court. The ruins are among the nine sites inscribed on the World Heritage List in December 2000 as the “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.”

The Nakijin Village History and Culture Center has permanent exhibitions on the history of the village, its settlements and communities, and local life and culture. Finds from Nakijin Castle are also on display. Check the current visitor regulations before your visit. In Imadomari, preserved Fukugi tree-lined avenues and numerous traditional houses define the settlement. The trees were planted to protect against northerly winds and typhoons; here, you can see how wind protection and the living environment work together.

Festivals, Awamori and Local Crafts

Nakijin’s traditional Hōnen Festival takes place annually or every two years. It is held to pray for a bountiful harvest and give thanks for it. Dancers perform Eisa and lion dances in colourful costumes, while stalls sell local agricultural products and handmade crafts. If the festival is a reason for your trip, check the specific event dates in advance. Nakijin watermelon is also one of the village’s local specialities.

On a brewery tour at Nakijin Shuzo, visitors learn about the awamori-making process and can observe production alongside the staff. Dyeing workshops can also be part of a sightseeing tour in Nakijin: for example, you can decorate tote bags, tenugui hand towels, T-shirts and scarves using indigo, earth and plant dyes made with plants and soil from the village. These examples offer two distinct experiences: an insight into how a local drink is made and a creative activity using dye materials from the village.

Coastlines and Water Activities

Uppama is a white-sand beach about one kilometre long. Naganaato is shorter, at around 300 metres, and nearly straight; it has a wide sandy beach where numerous pieces of coral can be seen. The approximate lengths and the features described for each beach offer a practical comparison when planning your time on the coast. According to visitor information updated on 13 June 2025, Uppama could also be used free of charge without an overnight stay at the adjoining hotel; marine leisure activities were available for a fee. Check the latest information on access and use before your visit.

A description of Nakijin Umibe Nature School updated on 2 February 2025 lists a one-hour-and-45-minute mangrove kayaking course for participants aged three and over. At low tide, fiddler crabs and mudskippers can be observed; at high tide, the kayak tour goes through a bay. Low and high tides offer different experiences here: one focuses on observing wildlife in the mangrove area, while the other takes you through the bay.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Nakijin Castle Ruins are accessible by bus. The walk from the Nakijin Castle bus stop takes zero minutes, while the walk from the Nakijin Castle Entrance bus stop takes about 15 minutes. Bus routes and timetables can change, so check connections before travelling. Near Nakijin Village Hall are the tourism association and Nakijin no Eki Sore rest stop, with a sales area and restaurant, as well as cafés and restaurants.
