Chatan has many sides to discover: on the west coast, the coastal stretch runs from Miyagi Coast to Araha Beach. The townscape has a feel reminiscent of the west coast of the United States. The area also offers historical sites, opportunities for marine activities, and places for entertainment and shopping. You can tailor your trip to your family’s interests—for example, cultural history, activities by the sea, or a visit to the town beach.

Cultural History in Chatan

The Chatan Museum’s permanent exhibition focuses on the lives and natural environment of the Jōmon people who lived in Chatan. Visitors interested in early ways of life and the area’s natural history will find a distinct way to explore the past here. The Ireibaru archaeological site, designated a national historic site, is located right next to the museum. It opened to the public on July 1, 2025. Together, the museum and site offer two different ways to engage with Chatan’s history: an exhibition on the lives of the Jōmon people and the archaeological site itself.

Uchinaa House also focuses on traditional Okinawan architecture. Traditional homes and other structures have been reconstructed there, including the former Medorima House, a takakura storehouse, a fūru, and a hinpun. These structures represent different elements of the reconstructed built environment and make a visit appealing to travelers interested in traditional architecture as well as exhibitions.

The ruins of Chatan Castle are part of a gusuku complex. They served as Nakayama’s northern stronghold and remained in use after the Ryūkyū Kingdom was founded. This offers another perspective on Chatan, looking beyond its present-day townscape to the region’s political history.

Sea, Beach, and Experiences

Uminchu Wharf is a central hub for marine activities and hands-on learning. The public facility also includes a restaurant run by the Chatan Fisheries Cooperative, a direct-sales shop, and challenge shops supported by local residents. It is open to both residents and tourists. Travelers interested in activities related to the sea can add this spot to their plans; dining and direct sales are also among the offerings mentioned here.

Araha Park has combination play equipment, including a ship-shaped structure called “Indian Oak.” It’s a specific destination for families who want to include play options in their day-trip plans. Mihama American Village, a large entertainment and shopping center in Chatan, offers a different focus. Sunset Beach, a town beach, is right next to it. If the beach and shopping are important to your trip, the beach’s location beside the center brings two different interests together in one place.

Getting There and Holiday Rentals

You can reach Mihama American Village on bus routes 28 or 29 from stop 3 at Naha Bus Terminal; the journey takes about 40 minutes. When choosing a holiday rental in Chatan, your planned activities may help you decide: if you’re mainly interested in historical sites and traditional architecture, the museum, Ireibaru, Uchinaa House, and the castle ruins are cultural points of interest. If you’re more interested in marine activities, play options, the beach, or shopping and entertainment, Uminchu Wharf, Araha Park, and Mihama American Village offer other themes for your stay. The right choice depends on what you and your family want to discover in Chatan.
