In Tsunan, art stops in Ōwarino and the climb to the Komatsubara Marshland offer different ways to shape your stay. There is also a historical connection to the Tsunan Snow Festival and a large parade featuring folk dancing, listed in the 2026 programme. You can therefore plan your trip around art and local businesses, or around a hike with your own schedule and access arrangements in mind.

Art and local discoveries in Ōwarino

The official art cycling route includes Ōwarino Shopping Street, one of the route’s main art stops. The area around the street features numerous new works from the art festival. If you plan to take the cycling route, check before setting out whether it is currently open.

There are also sake breweries, restaurants and sweet shops nearby. Alongside the artworks, sake, food and sweets are other reasons to visit Ōwarino. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay more on the art festival’s works or on the businesses around the shopping street. Individual artworks and businesses may change, so keep this in mind if you are planning a specific stop.

Festival culture and finding your way around

The special event venue for the Tsunan Snow Festival is on the former site of the agricultural administration office in Ōwarino. It is a three-minute walk from Tsunan Town Hall. This short walking distance places the former festival site at a clearly identified point in town.

The 2026 programme for the Tsunan Festival lists a large parade featuring folk dancing. If you are travelling at another time, check the programme for the relevant year to make sure your plans match the festival events scheduled.

Climb to the Komatsubara Marshland

The climb to the Komatsubara Marshland starts in central Ōwarino and passes through the Ōta-Shinden settlement. After about a 20-minute drive, you reach a closed gate on the Ōba Forest Road. From the gate, the route continues through coniferous and deciduous forest; allow about 90 minutes to reach the lower part of the marshland.

The municipal trail information was updated in 2018. Check current access and trail conditions before hiking. For day planning, there are two separate sections: the drive to the gate and the walk from there to the lower part of the marshland. The closed gate is an important condition to take into account before setting out.

Choose a holiday rental to suit your travel plans

When choosing a holiday rental in Tsunan, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. The art cycling route, festival artworks and businesses near Ōwarino Shopping Street make for a different day out than the climb to the marshland, which requires you to consider driving time, walking time and access. You can weigh up accommodation location and your preferred daily schedule together.

If you want to combine both, keep the different routes in mind: the art cycling route is for cycling, while the climb involves a drive to the gate followed by about 90 minutes on foot. Compare the location of a holiday rental with the stops you actually want to visit, and fit it into your own daily rhythm.
