Suwa brings together the expansive Lake Suwa, shrines, the history of castles and museums, and scenic viewpoints. The landscape and culture each offer something different: you can walk or cycle along the lakeshore, while the wider area also includes historical exhibitions and distinctive natural sites. When choosing a holiday rental, consider whether your travel plans focus mainly on the water, cultural sites or the surrounding landscape.

Lake Suwa and its natural phenomena

Lake Suwa extends across Suwa City, Okaya City and Shimosuwa Town. It lies 759 metres above sea level, has a circumference of 15.9 kilometres and covers an area of 13.3 square kilometres. This makes it the largest lake in Nagano Prefecture. Walking and cycling along the shore are among the available activities; jogging and cycling paths are also laid out there. The wider Suwa area has lakeside facilities such as a yacht harbour and a marina. Popular activities include sailing, motorboating, windsurfing and kayaking.

A distinctive natural phenomenon is known as Omiwatari. When Lake Suwa freezes over completely, the ice can repeatedly contract and expand, forming cracks and mountain-like ridges. This phenomenon has occurred less often in recent years. Experiences by the lake therefore vary depending on your interests: the paths along the shore offer space to get active, while Omiwatari depends on an unusual condition of the lake.

Shrines, a castle and exhibitions

On the second floor of the Lake Suwa Geyser Center, the “Suwa Location Review Exhibition” showcases filming locations and props from films and TV series made in the Suwa region. One floor above, photographs and models of fireworks illustrate the history and scale of the Lake Suwa fireworks displays. Takashima Castle also focuses on history: the second floor displays relics and historical materials related to castle construction, castle lords, their retainers and domain administration. The third floor has a viewpoint overlooking the Suwa Plain. Exhibition displays may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before visiting.

Kamisha-Honmiya is one of the four shrines of Suwa Taisha. It is considered a representative example of the Suwa style and preserves more buildings than any of the other four shrines. The Suwa City Museum stands in front of the shrine’s large gate. Its exhibits include historical and ethnographic materials relating to the Onbashira Festival and Omiwatari. These places offer different perspectives: the exhibitions explore regional history and traditions, while the view from the castle tower focuses on the Suwa Plain.

Views, flowers and wetlands

Set on high ground in the Kamisuwa-Tateishi area, Tateishi Park overlooks Lake Suwa and is one of Shinshu’s 100 selected sunset spots. Takashima Park is home to the castle tower of Takashima Castle; the park is known for its cherry blossoms, and flowers can also be seen there in different seasons. Those interested in nature and protected areas can find a different kind of landscape at Yashimagahara Wetland: it lies on the border between Suwa City and Shimoshūwa Town and is designated a national natural monument.

Experiences to help plan your trip

In the Suwa area, guided tours of local attractions and two- to three-hour walking tours, including walks through Kamisuwa, are available by prior reservation. Remember to book when planning your visit; details and fees may change. The digital map for the “Suwa Five Breweries” tour can also help you explore a particular theme: it includes explanatory videos about the history and distinctive features of each brewery. The digital map’s availability may change.

If you are travelling with children or in a group, the range of things to do can help you plan each day around your shared interests: time by the lake, cultural history or an outing to a distinctive landscape. When looking for a holiday rental in Suwa, you can consider which of these experiences matter most for your trip.
