Higashimatsushima brings together striking landscapes and special cultural sites on Miyatojima: Ohtakamori rises in the center of the island, while Sagakei is known for its rock faces at the southeastern tip. The area also has a New Year’s ritual with a long history, records of the earthquake and the city’s recovery, and regional specialties. This means you can tailor your stay to a wide range of interests.

Miyatojima Between Mountain and Rocky Landscape

Ohtakamori is 105.8 meters high and lies in the center of Miyatojima. Midway up the slope is Ohtakamori Yakushido, a nationally registered tangible cultural property. The building was completed in 1915 and registered on June 29, 2022. Yakushido gives the mountain a cultural and historical dimension as well.

Sagakei offers a different landscape: The gorge lies at the southeastern tip of Miyatojima in Oku-Matsushima and is one of Japan’s three great gorges. Small sightseeing boats operate irregularly along the Sagakei route, taking visitors close to the sea and the rock faces.

Culture and Remembrance

Miyatojima is also home to the Satohama Shell Mound (里浜貝塚), designated a national historic site of Japan in February 1995. Together with Ohtakamori Yakushido and the Higashimatsushima Disaster Recovery Memorial Museum, it adds a historical and cultural dimension to a trip. The museum presents records of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the city’s recovery. The range of themes thus extends from a historic site and a cultural property to the city’s more recent history.

Another cultural connection is Tsukihama’s Enzu no Wari on Miyatojima. This New Year’s ritual to drive away birds has been performed for more than 200 years and is designated an important intangible folk cultural property. It is a striking example of a local tradition passed down through generations.

The skies above the city can also be part of the experience: The Blue Impulse aerobatic team is based at Matsushima Air Base in Higashimatsushima. Training flights take place regularly over the city. If the timing is right, you may see what is known as smoke art in the sky. This cannot be treated as a reliably scheduled activity, but it is a distinctive aspect of the area’s character.

Regional Specialties

Higashimatsushima oysters are among the area’s culinary specialties. They are grilled at oyster huts and are also served in restaurants as hot pot, fried, and in other dishes. This offers different ways to experience the same regional ingredient. Chanko Haginoi in Higashimatsushima also serves nori udon made with nori from Ōmagahama that was presented to the Imperial Household. If you enjoy discovering local food culture while traveling, you can plan this specialty as a culinary highlight in its own right.
