Toba: A Castle, Parks and Pearl History
Accommodation in Toba
Surrounded by water, a castle and the history of pearl cultivation give Toba a distinctly maritime character. Seasonal scenes in the parks and marine-life exhibits at the aquarium add to its appeal. For families, these different themes can spark conversation: What makes a sea castle special, and what stories do wildlife and pearl culture tell? When planning your trip, it is worth considering in advance which interests you would like to shape your stay.
A Castle with a Maritime Character
Kuki Yoshitaka had Toba Castle built on a hill on the south bank of the mouth of the Myōkei River. According to tradition, it was completed in 1594. The castle was a rare sea castle in Japan: water surrounded the site, and its main gate faced the coast. This combination of location and the direction of the gate gives the castle’s history its maritime character.
According to the municipal description updated on March 31, 2022, remains of stone walls are preserved around the main bailey and behind the municipal cultural center. These traces complement the traditional account of the castle’s construction with specific locations where remnants of its walls are said to remain.
Promenades, Blossoms and Local Landmarks
Sadahama East Park provides access to the Kamome no Sanpomichi promenade, also known as Seagull Walk. A dolphin statue donated by the sister city of Santa Barbara stands in the central fountain basin; the fountain is illuminated at night. As the lighting may change, check in advance if you are visiting specifically for this nighttime feature.
In spring, Shiroyama Park is a popular spot for viewing cherry blossoms. Lanterns are lit at night, allowing visitors to see the blossoms after dark as well. The lighting arrangements may change, so if an evening visit is important to your plans, check the current arrangements in advance.
Another local landmark is Egonomatsu, the large pine tree in Sadahama West Park. It has long been considered a symbol of encounters. This traditional significance adds a cultural note distinct from the spring blossoms and nighttime lighting.
Marine Life and Pearl History
Walruses perform tricks for visitors. Animal shows and programs may change; if a show is essential to your plans, check the current program in advance.
On Mikimoto Pearl Island, Kokichi Mikimoto achieved the world’s first cultured pearl in 1893; the island opened to visitors in 1951. These two dates mark different milestones: 1893 for the achievement in pearl cultivation, and 1951 for the start of public access. This adds a specific story of pearl culture to Toba’s castle and marine life themes.
