Caldera, Peaks and Trails in the Aso Area

At an elevation of around 1,100 metres, Kusasenrigahama is a well-known attraction in the Aso area. From there, you can see grazing horses and the smoking crater of Aso Nakadake. The Aso Volcano Museum offers guided tours and exhibitions that explain volcanic eruptions and illustrate how calderas form. In Aso-Kuju National Park, hiking, outdoor sports and visits to hot springs are possible activities. If you would rather take a scenic drive, the Milk Road offers a picturesque route through the hills, grasslands and mountains of the Aso area; check road conditions before setting out.

A range of route descriptions is available to help you find your way on hikes. The beginner route on Kishimadake passes through grassy mountains and into the area around a remnant crater basin. Most trails there are paved, with steps on the slopes, and the climb is described as suitable for beginners too. More challenging is the intermediate route from Nakadake to Takadake: it starts at Kusasenri, passes Nakadake and continues over Takadake to Sensuikyo Gorge. It is designed for hikers with good stamina. The trails therefore differ not only in scenery but also in their stated level of difficulty. Check for current restrictions before setting out.

The section of the Kyushu Nature Trail in the prefecture includes nine suggested routes. They pass through the Aso caldera landscape, along the coast of Amakusa, and through grasslands and beside streams, among other places. Historic sites, scenic landmarks and cultural properties are also found along the way. This network of routes offers a different perspective from a single peak trail: it connects a variety of landscape and cultural themes across a range of walks.

City Views, Shrines and Regional Excursions

Kumamoto Castle is considered the main tourist attraction in Kumamoto City. It is known for its black exterior and steep fortifications. From the top floor of the main tower, the view stretches across the city to the distant Aso Mountains. If you are interested in architecture and urban history, you can see this striking castle as a different kind of travel experience from nature and hiking in the Aso area.

In Hitoyoshi, boat trips on the Kuma River are among the main attractions for visitors. Options include leisurely rides and fast-paced adventure courses; check the details of each offering separately. Also in Hitoyoshi is Aoi Aso-jinja Shrine. Its distinctive thatched roofs reflect a 1,200-year history. Five structures—the main shrine, offering hall, worship hall, corridor and gate—are National Treasures of Japan.

Festivals and churches also offer insight into regional traditions. The grand autumn festival of Fujisaki Hachimangu, also called the Zuibyo Festival, takes place in mid-September. The procession includes several portable mikoshi shrines and local people dressed as samurai; exact dates and programmes may vary. At one October edition of the Mizuakari Festival, 54,000 lanterns were displayed around Kumamoto Castle. Amakusa has numerous museums and churches of interest to visitors interested in history. Sakitsu Catholic Church is built in the Gothic style; the present building was rebuilt in 1934.

Caves, Coast and Culinary Experiences

Kyusendo Cave is about 4,800 metres long. Its stalagmites and stalactites formed over around 300 million years and continue to grow. Visitors can choose between two routes: a general cave tour lasting about 30 minutes and an exploration route that includes, among other features, a 40-metre-deep vertical passage. A terrace offers views of the natural landscape of Kuma Village. The two routes offer different experiences, from a tour with a set duration to a passage through a striking section of the cave.

Further afield, Amakusa offers beaches, hot springs and maritime activities such as fishing, diving, snorkelling and wakeboarding. Dolphin watching is possible there year-round; the stated sighting rate is over 90 percent, though it may vary. For cyclists, the approximately 23-kilometre Amakusa West Coast Sunset Cycling Route passes through Sakitsu Village and along the surrounding west coast. Another option is the approximately 82-kilometre Kikuchi-Yamaga Route in the Kikuchi city area. Check the relevant route conditions and traffic rules before cycling.

At the Sengetsu Shuzo distillery, visitors can sample shochu brewed on site; check in advance whether tastings are available. In Asagiri, the “My Kuma Shochu Making Experience Owner System” combines rice planting, rice harvesting and shochu production, allowing participants to make their own shochu. This shochu experience uses rice grown using pesticide-free Aigamo farming methods and spring water. If you would like to plan around seasonal local produce, the grape season at Aso Tourist Grape Farm North Grape Farm runs from September to October. Freshly harvested grapes are used to make products such as jam and sorbet; check the season before your trip.
