Get to know Miyako through its historic role as a port and practical ways to explore the surrounding area. Its harbor and trade history spans the Edo period through a dated event in 1869. For travel planning, there is also a bicycle rental service and a bus connection to nearby Jodogahama Beach. When looking for a holiday rental, consider whether you want to focus on Miyako itself or also include an outing to the surrounding area.

Harbor and Trade History

During the Edo period, Miyako Port became an important port for the Morioka Domain. It was also a convenient port of call on the route between Edo and Matsumae in Hokkaido. Known as the “Nanbu Port of Miyako,” it was famous throughout the country. These aspects—the port’s importance to the Morioka Domain, its role as a port of call, and the renown of its name—bring Miyako’s historic role as a port to life. The route places the port within a connection between two named places, rather than treating it only as a single point in the city’s history.

As maritime trade with Edo grew, many trading houses specializing in cargo ship trade and freight forwarding opened branches in Miyako-machi. Among them, Kikuya and Kuraya in Isogai developed into large commercial houses; many historical documents have also been preserved. While the port route describes Miyako’s connection to the outside world, this part of the story highlights commercial activity at specific named locations. Miyako-machi, Isogai, Kikuya, and Kuraya provide concrete points of reference for the trade history and distinguish the individual houses from the broader role of the port.

Two Historical Periods

A later period is marked by an exact date: on March 25, 1869, the so-called Naval Battle of Miyako Bay took place; it is considered Japan’s first naval battle in the Western style. While the development of trade places Miyako’s role in the Edo period in context, the naval battle is associated with a single date. This gives two distinct ways of approaching the town’s history: trade during the Edo period and the event of 1869.

Bicycle Rental and an Outing to Jodogahama

The Miyako Station Front Tourist Information Center offers bicycle rentals, with nine bicycles available. Rentals are for a maximum of eight hours and must be reserved at least three days in advance. The price is 1,500 yen per bicycle for the full day; rental hours are listed as 09:00 to 17:00 year-round. Check current hours and seasonal conditions before your trip. The three-day advance booking requirement means you should plan your cycling day ahead of time, and the maximum rental period limits how long you can use the bicycle.

A bus runs from Miyako Station to nearby Jodogahama Beach; the journey takes about 20 minutes. Check the timetable before departure. The bus connection and bicycle rental are different planning options: for the bus, the departure point and approximate journey time are specified, while advance booking and the usage limit are the main considerations for bicycle rental. You can therefore plan for both options separately as part of your day.

The Right Holiday Rental for Your Travel Plans

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: would you like to center your trip on Miyako’s harbor and trade history, or also include Jodogahama? For an outing, the bus connection from Miyako Station is a practical planning reference; for a day with bicycle rental, the advance booking requirement and maximum rental period matter. Compare specific holiday rentals with your own daily itinerary and the activities you want to include. This way, you can base your choice on the routes and experiences you actually plan to enjoy.
