On Awaji, travel interests range from the Naruto whirlpools shaped by the ebb and flow of the tides to pine-lined shores, mountain scenery and a performing art with a history of more than 500 years. When looking for a holiday rental in Minami-Awaji, it is worth first considering which of these aspects you want to shape your stay. The range of experiences offers concrete points to consider when planning.

Tides and Pine-Lined Coast

The Ōnaruto Bridge spans the Naruto Strait and connects Shikoku with Awaji Island. The Naruto whirlpools formed by the ebb and flow of the tides can be seen beneath the bridge. In spring and autumn, they can reach about 30 metres in diameter. This makes a natural phenomenon the main attraction, with its size explicitly given as an approximate, seasonal figure.

The Uzushio Cruise combines a guided trip to the whirlpools with explanations: a guide describes how they form and highlights features of the region. The stated departure point is Uzushio Dome Nanairokan at Fukura Port in Minamiawaji City. If the cruise is important to your plans, check current availability with the operator.

Keino Matsubara lies on the west coast of Awaji Island, with a white sandy beach and around 50,000 pine trees stretching over about 2.5 kilometres. Alongside the beach and pine forest is a flat, quiet stretch of coast where you can go for a walk. Keino Matsubara is also one of Japan’s “100 Best Sunset Spots”.

Mountain Trails and Natural Heritage

At 607.9 metres, Mount Yuzuruha is the highest mountain on Awaji Island and is part of Setonaikai National Park. The Yuzuruha Kodō and Kinki Nature Trail hiking routes run across the mountain. Rare plants and animals live in the area thanks to its warm climate and varied terrain. These features offer a different focus from the coastal scenery: here, the emphasis is on elevation, hiking trails and biodiversity.

The stand of Arakashi oaks in the sacred grove of Yuzuruha Shrine is also designated as a natural monument of Hyōgo Prefecture. This protected designation applies to the oak stand.

Activities and Culture on Awaji

Awaji Janohire Outdoor Resort is located on the Janohire coast at the southern tip of Awaji Island, surrounded by sea and mountains. Activities include encounters with dolphins, fishing, sea kayaking, SUP and FIB. Alongside nature watching, there are also various water-based activities to choose from.

At Keino Matsubara, participants in a conservation programme can learn more about the pine forest’s history, flora and ecosystem, and take part in preserving it. This includes collecting pine needles and cleaning the coast. Planting young pine trees is seasonal and takes place from February to March.

Another cultural facet is Awaji Ningyō Jōruri. This performing art has been preserved and passed down for more than 500 years. Over time, it has embraced new elements without changing its essence. Cultural traditions thus complement the range of coastal, mountain and water-based experiences.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Search

When choosing a holiday rental, you can compare experiences according to the kind of holiday you want: tides and a guided cruise, coastal walks, mountain trails, activities at sea or culture. This lets you tailor your search for holiday rentals to the places and experiences you actually want to visit.
