In clear weather, you can see Mount Yōtei, also known as “Ezo Fuji,” from the Niseko United Ski Area; at the same time, the view stretches far across the snow-covered landscape. The combination of mountain panoramas, different destinations, and rail options gives a trip to Niseko several possible focuses. Which of these matters to you can also guide your choice of holiday rental.

Four Ski Resorts to Help You Plan

The Niseko United Ski Area spans Niseko Town and Kutchan Town. It comprises Niseko Annupuri International Ski Area, Niseko Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village Ski Resort, and Niseko HANAZONO Resort. These four names provide a concrete starting point for planning your trip: if you want to focus your stay on a particular area, you can take this into account when choosing your base. This way, you can consider not just the place name, but also the destination that is central to your plans.

Rail Connections and Routes to the Ski Resorts

In the wider region, express and local trains run between New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, Otaru, Kutchan, and Niseko. One train route runs from New Chitose Airport Station via Otaru Station and Kutchan Station to Niseko Station. If you are planning this route, check the current route and train connections before your trip.

Buses or taxis are available from Kutchan Station or Niseko Station for onward travel to the respective Niseko United ski resorts. This means that planning your arrival involves both choosing a train route and arranging the connection to your chosen ski resort. Check current bus and taxi connections before setting off, too.

Local History and Railways

One historical connection takes us to the area of present-day Niseko Town: in 1898, Takeshi Arishima applied to lease the undeveloped land of Makkaribetsu. He was the father of the writer Takeo Arishima. This episode connects the history of the municipality with a specific person and a named area of land.

Railways are also part of the municipality’s history. In 2019, the former turntable at the Shintoku rail depot and the steam locomotive “9643” were officially opened to the public. If you are planning to visit these two railway landmarks, check the current visiting schedule in advance.

Local Life and Exploring by Bike

綺羅の湯 is a station-side hot spring facility in Niseko Town. The facility has a small shop selling original merchandise, local alcoholic beverages, and vegetables. It offers a distinct local experience alongside the ski resorts and railway history.

Green Bikes are available to rent at Niseko Station. The electric bicycles make it easier to ride through Niseko’s hilly town area. The tourism association’s cycling route includes Niseko Bridge as a photo stop; flowers in various colors are planted there depending on the season. So, alongside the ski resorts, you can plan around a bike rental at the station and a photo stop with seasonal plantings.
