In the wider travel area of Munakata-shi, coastal scenery, island culture, and historic sites come together. The city lies in the north of Fukuoka Prefecture, on the Genkai Sea, and is surrounded by mountains on three sides. When choosing a vacation rental in Munakata, it’s worth first deciding which experiences matter most to your trip: the cultural, maritime, and culinary sides of the wider area each offer a different focus.

Cultural History Between Island and Mainland

In 2017, “The Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region” was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another way to explore Okinoshima’s history is through the Shinpōkan Treasure Hall at Munakata Taisha. Around 80,000 national treasures discovered on the island are displayed there, including mirrors, magatama beads, and gold rings.

Takamiya Saijo is also associated with religious traditions. The site is said to be where Ichikishimahime-no-kami descended, and is considered the place where the Munakata deities descended. This ancient site of worship and ritual has no shrine building; religious ceremonies are still held there. Akama-juku offers a different perspective on history: its historic streetscape in the Akama district evokes the period from the Edo era through the Meiji era.

A large festival is held on Ōshima every spring and autumn. Priests perform the ceremony while miko offer Kagura dances. Tanabata is also still celebrated as a religious ceremony at Munakata Taisha Nakatsu-gu; the custom has been observed there for a long time. These recurring festivals are part of a long-standing religious tradition.

Ōshima: Rituals, the Sea, and Outdoor Activities

Ōshima is home to Munakata Taisha Nakatsu-gu and Okitsu-gu Yohaisho. From the island, you can get closest to Okinoshima. A permanent exhibition at Umi no Michi Munakata-kan traces the journeys of people from Munakata who traveled across the Genkai Sea. The 3D theater uses images and sound to bring Okinoshima to life—a place where visitors are normally not permitted to land. Learning activities include making magatama beads and starting a fire; check the event dates for these activities.

Outdoor activities on Ōshima include fishing, buggy rides, and horseback riding. The Umining Oshima marine experience facility has a sea fishing park and a fishing pier; experiences offered there also include sea kayaking and underwater observation. For a quieter experience, head to the coast opposite the Ōshima ferry terminal, where you can watch the sun set over the sea throughout the year.

If you enjoy walking to a viewpoint, visit Fūsha on the north side of Ōshima. A walking trail passes through Canadian Camp Ōshima Ranch and climbs to a viewpoint on a hill overlooking the sea. The Munakata-Ōshima Course, the first Olle course in Fukuoka Prefecture, starts with a 25-minute boat ride from Kamiminato Ferry Terminal to Ōshima. If you plan to take this route, check the ferry schedule in advance.

Local Cuisine and Choosing Your Vacation Rental

At 道の駅むなかた, the selection ranges from fresh seafood from the Genkai Sea and vegetables harvested in the morning to seasonal fruit, bento, prepared foods, and locally processed products. Other offerings include the 姫の穂 rice bread workshop, the はまゆう restaurant, the higoro flower and handicraft shop, the FRATTO smoothie stand, and the むなたびラボ tourism station. Facilities and offerings may change, so check what is currently available before your visit.

A specific question can help you choose a vacation rental: should your trip focus mainly on religious sites and history, island activities and the sea, or local food? Then compare the accommodation’s location with the places you plan to visit.
