Discover Shirako: Cultural Heritage, Beaches, and Seasonal Experiences
Accommodation in Shirako
Shirako can be explored through a range of interests: Ushigome is home to designated cultural properties, while beaches, sports, and seasonal experiences offer other highlights across the municipality. This distinction can help with trip planning. A visit focused on tradition involves different interests from a stay centered on beach time, tennis, or a harvest experience. You can start by deciding which aspects of Shirako you want to shape your trip.
Cultural Heritage in Ushigome
The Ushigome Lion Dance is one of Shirako’s designated cultural properties and is said to have begun during the Tenpō era (1830–1843). As of July 22, 2026, it is listed as inactive.
The Spirit Memorial Tower is located at 449 Ushigome and is designated by Shirako as a historic cultural monument. Gyotokuji Temple is listed as the associated site. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; please coordinate your visit in advance. The Manji Lantern at 1808 Ushigome is designated as a tangible folk cultural property; it was designated on March 1, 1980. Konoue Shrine is listed as its location, and the lantern is freely accessible.
Culture Across the Municipality and the River Landscape
Outside Ushigome, the Shirako Museum of History and Folklore broadens the view of the municipality. Four exhibition rooms focus on rural and maritime life, local festivals, Shirako’s history, and traditional clothing. The museum is on the second floor of the Shirako Central Community Center and serves as a learning center for the municipality’s cultural properties and traditional cultures.
Shirako Nature Park adds a landscape-focused dimension: it covers 63.2 hectares on both banks of the Minamishirakamegawa River and makes use of the river valley’s natural setting. Alongside the cultural sites, the river landscape is another distinct feature of the municipality.
Beaches, Sports, and Seasonal Experiences
Furushō Beach is one of two beaches in Shirako. The wide sandy beaches offer opportunities for seaside recreation; seasonal activities may vary. If beach time is important to your trip, check what is available for your preferred dates.
The Shirako Tennis Festival takes place every June. It features tennis and soft tennis, attracts participants from across Japan, and uses about 340 tennis courts in the municipality. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the specific dates and program details separately.
Onion harvesting is another seasonal activity: each May, visitors can take part in a harvest experience in the fields of local onion farmers in Shirako. Confirm in advance which farms are participating in your preferred year.
Getting There and Choosing When to Travel
In the timetable revised on March 18, 2024, Ushigome is listed as a stop on the Shirako–Tokyo express bus route. Check the current timetable and departure times before traveling.
The seasonal activities make it easy to distinguish between travel periods: onion harvesting takes place in May, the Tennis Festival in June, and beach activities may vary by season. If you would like to visit the Spirit Memorial Tower, also factor in the need to arrange your visit in advance. These highlights can help you tailor your search for a holiday rental in Shirako to the experiences that matter most for your trip.
