Minamibōsō offers a range of ways to shape a holiday around your interests: coastal areas, a distinctive tradition of Japanese cuisine, harvest and fish-processing experiences, as well as gardens and autumn foliage. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you could start by considering whether you would like to focus primarily on culture, nature or active experiences.

Coast Between the Bay and the Pacific

Minamibōsō City has a coastline on Tokyo Bay to the west and on the Pacific Ocean to the east and south. Its coastline is part of the Minamibōsō National Natural Park. These different coastal settings give the travel area a broad geographical scope. This landscape can be a starting point when choosing a holiday rental; cultural and gardening interests offer other considerations for planning your holiday.

A Special Ceremony Celebrating Culinary Tradition

Takaya Shrine (高家神社) in Chikura is considered Japan’s only shrine enshrining Iwakamutsukari-no-mikoto (磐鹿六雁命), who is revered as a deity of cooking. The connection to Japanese cuisine is also reflected in Hōchō-shiki (庖丁式), a special ceremony that conveys the traditions of Japanese cuisine. It takes place every year in May, October and November. It is held three times a year at spring and autumn festivals and thanksgiving festivals, and the public can watch. If you would like to plan your trip around the ceremony, check the specific dates in advance. That way, you can plan your visit around a cultural event rather than focusing only on general sightseeing.

Nature and Hands-On Experiences

The Ōfusa-misaki Nature Park is located in the Tomiura district of Minamibōsō. It covers 47.5 hectares, offers camping and hiking, and is considered a place to experience nature. It combines a specific area with two activities that put nature and exercise at the forefront.

Experiences involving loquats and dried fish are also among the activities described in the town. During the loquat experience, participants learn about cultivation from farmers and can harvest the fruit. The dried-fish experience has a different focus: participants learn how to handle a knife, prepare horse mackerel, soak the fish in salt water and dry it in the sun. One experience focuses on cultivation and harvesting, the other on fish processing. If these experiences are important to your trip, check in advance whether they are available on your travel dates.

Autumn Foliage, Flowers and Architecture

Komatsuji Temple (小松寺) is considered an important destination in Minamibōsō for autumn foliage; the timing varies. By contrast, seasonal flowers, including rosemary, are planted throughout the year in the garden at Rosemary Park in Minamibōsō. This comparison pairs an explicitly autumnal natural attraction with a garden whose planting includes seasonal flowers throughout the year.

Rosemary Park also has Rosemary Hall, a church-like building, and a replica of the house where Shakespeare spent the last years of his life. The two buildings offer different points of interest: Rosemary Hall stands out for its church-like appearance, while the replica evokes Shakespeare’s final years.

The experiences also differ in kind: the public can watch the Hōchō-shiki ceremony; the loquat and dried-fish experiences focus on active participation; and camping and hiking are among the options at Ōfusa-misaki Nature Park. When looking for a holiday rental, you can use these differences to first decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.
