Nature, culture and seasonal experiences are at the heart of a trip to Toyone. In the associated municipality, options range from mountain landscapes and stargazing tours to a long-standing festival and regional specialities. The best time to visit therefore also depends on whether you are most interested in blossoms and views, cultural events or outdoor activities.

Mountain Landscapes Through the Seasons

Mount Chausu lies on the border between Toyone in Aichi Prefecture and Neba in Nagano Prefecture. At 1,415 metres, it is the highest mountain in Aichi Prefecture. The landscape at Chausuyama Kogen changes throughout the year: in winter, the area is used as a ski resort, while in spring, its hillsides are covered in flowers. The Shibazakura Hill there covers about 2.2 hectares, with around 400,000 moss phlox plants usually in bloom from mid-May to early June. Exact bloom dates may vary from year to year.

A shibazakura festival is held on the hill during the blooming season; its dates can also change. Planting began in fiscal year 2007 as part of a five-year plan to make Chausuyama Kogen a spring day-trip destination. Chausuyama Kogen also has a lift; check its operating hours in advance. For panoramic views, head to Hagitaro-yama, south of Mount Chausu, which offers views of the Southern Alps and, on clear days, Hamamatsu and Nagoya.

Several sections around the Shin-Toyone Dam have been developed as walking trails and are suitable for hiking. Some roads are currently closed, so check local access conditions before your visit. This lets you include scenery and exercise in your plans without committing to a particular route or walking time.

Starry Skies and Living Traditions

The night sky is another special reason to plan a trip. An event announcement from 2026 lists special stargazing tours at the Peak Observatory from September to November, limited to a maximum of three groups. Check the seasonal information before travelling. The Tenku Stargazing Society also offers tours with explanations in Japanese about the stars of the Mikawa region, as well as telescope viewing. Programme details may change.

Sakauba’s Hana Festival at Hachiman Shrine offers a different kind of evening programme. This more than 700-year-old tradition lasts all night and is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Event dates vary from year to year. Those interested in culture and traditional customs will find a clear contrast here with the natural experiences at Chausuyama: rather than blossoms and mountain views, the focus is on a time-honoured festival and its long duration.

For active outdoor pursuits, Green Stage Han no Ki offers trout fishing, a large maze and charcoal grilling. The seasonal activities are available from spring to autumn; grilling requires a reservation. Check current availability before you arrive. The different activities offer a range of ways to plan your day without assuming any particular combination.

Bathing and Regional Cuisine

湯~らんどパルとよね offers eight types of hot spring baths, including an open-air bath surrounded by greenery. Two different water qualities are available there, alternating depending on the period. This is another way to enjoy a quieter part of your stay alongside hikes, festivals or nature-watching.

At the Michi-no-Eki Toyone Green Port Miyajima, the restaurant serves homemade dishes featuring sturgeon raised in Toyone’s clear natural waters, as well as fresh vegetables. The shop at Green Port Miyajima sells blueberries and products made from them. Regional ingredients and produce add a culinary dimension to the area’s attractions.

Choose a Travel Season to Suit Your Holiday Rental

If you are looking for a holiday rental in Toyone, first decide which experience you want to shape your stay. For the shibazakura blooms, the dates vary from year to year; for stargazing tours and the Hana Festival, check the relevant event calendar. Mountain views, walking trails, bathing and regional cuisine offer different highlights. Plan your trip around these differences and check seasonal information and any restrictions before you arrive.
