Culture around Kinneret

Near the travel destination of Kinneret, Beit Gordon presents an audiovisual display about four habitats around the Sea of Galilee, alongside an older natural history collection. It also covers changes to these habitats resulting from the Zionist settlement of the region. Natural history and regional history come together in this presentation: the habitats are considered both as part of a landscape and in terms of their historical changes. For travelers interested in both natural history and the region’s history, Beit Gordon offers a specific cultural point of interest near Kinneret.

Archaeological sites in the Northern District

In the wider travel destination of the Northern District, Tel Hazor and Tel Megiddo offer different points of interest. Tel Hazor is a biblical tell with significant remains of a city associated with the Bible. The visit focuses on the upper city. Tel Hazor includes Solomon’s Gate, dating to the 10th century BCE; the gate has six chambers and two towers. A Canaanite palace was used by the kings of Hazor in the 14th and 13th centuries BCE. These dates point to different periods in Tel Hazor’s history and give the gate and palace their own distinct historical context.

Another archaeological feature at Tel Hazor is its underground water-collection system. It represents sophisticated, geographically adapted engineering for storing water. The excavated shaft is 45 meters deep, with steps three meters wide cut into the walls of the vertical shaft. Tel Hazor’s fortifications are considered the best example of their kind in the area from southern Turkey to the northern Negev. The water system and fortifications thus offer different perspectives on engineering achievements and defensive structures.

Tel Megiddo adds further archaeological points of interest to these themes. Its Early Bronze Age temple complex is exceptional in terms of the number of its temples, the continuity of cult activity, and the documented ritual activities. Orthogonal means laid out at right angles: the Iron Age city plan has few parallels in the Levant. Tel Megiddo is one of three tells that preserve significant remains of cities associated with the Bible and are closely linked to events in the Bible. Thus, cult activity and urban planning stand side by side as two distinct perspectives on Tel Megiddo.
