Bet Sheʼan can be explored through two distinct questions: What do archaeological remains tell us about the city’s history, and what opportunities does the landscape along the Harod offer for spending time outdoors? The museum, national park and riverside trails each offer their own perspectives. Which holiday apartment or holiday home is right for your trip depends on which of these topics interest you most.

City History at the Museum and National Park

The Beit-Sheʼan Museum is housed in the old post office building in the heart of the Old City, opposite the Saraya building and near the Roman amphitheatre. It presents the heritage of the city and region from the founding of the State to the present day. The museum is therefore a starting point for anyone interested in the history of Bet Sheʼan and how it has changed.

Bet Sheʼan National Park preserves the remains of the Roman and Byzantine city of Bet Sheʼan, as well as the hill where biblical Bet Sheʼan was located. Unlike the museum’s broad thematic scope, the surviving traces of the city and the hill focus attention on earlier periods.

A look at cultural history in the Northern District also offers a regional point of comparison: Tel Megiddo is one of the biblical tells representative of sites with significant remains of cities associated with the Bible. This broadens the perspective beyond the history of Bet Sheʼan without treating the sites as one and the same.

Trails and the Riverside Landscape along the Harod

Nahal Harod Park is near the western entrance to Bet Sheʼan on Route 7078 and extends along both banks of the Harod River. Public facilities include a playground, trails, bridges and pergolas, as well as seating and picnic tables. The condition of individual facilities may change, so it is worth checking before your visit.

The starting point of the “Trail Between the Bridges” is in Bet Sheʼan, near the Turkish-Roman bridge on the east side of Route 7078. The section of trail along the north bank of the Harod River is paved and open to the public. This offers a different way to spend time outdoors than the facilities in the park. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.

Choose a Base That Suits Your Interests

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can start by deciding what you want your trip to focus on: city history with the museum and national park, or the trails and public facilities along the Harod. The playground, picnic facilities, riverside landscape and historical discoveries may also matter to you to varying degrees, depending on your interests. This way, you can choose your base according to your own priorities rather than a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
