Sedayu between markets, crafts and karst
Accommodation in Sedayu
Sedayu can be explored through several different themes: market activity, birdcage-making craft, karst along the Konteng River and the journey to Gua Payaman. When choosing a holiday rental, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Are you more interested in markets and crafts, or in a trip through the river landscape? This distinction makes planning more concrete and provides a clear starting point for looking for accommodation in Sedayu.
Markets and birdcage-making craft
According to the account passed down, the traditional Pasar Sungapan market is still in use; trading also takes place outside the designated market days. The regular market days are Pahing, Pon and Kliwon. These three days provide a clear time frame, but market activity is not limited to them. If the market is important to your plans, check the current activity and specific dates locally.
Bothokan in Argosari is also a local cultural point of interest: it is a centre for birdcage-making craft. This offers a different emphasis from Pasar Sungapan: there, the regular market days provide a time frame, while in Bothokan the craft itself is the main focus. Markets and crafts can therefore offer two distinct cultural highlights for your trip.
Karst along the Konteng River
Polaman River Tubing shifts the focus from cultural themes to the landscape. As you travel along the calm current of the Konteng River, you can see the distinctive karst formations. Here, two specific features come together: the river journey and the karst rocks visible along the way. Those interested in the landscape will find a different focus here from the markets and crafts.
Gua Payaman and getting there
Another practical point of reference is Gua Payaman in Kepuhan, Argorejo, Kapanewon Sedayu. The road to the cave is accessible to four-wheeled vehicles and buses; check current road conditions before setting out. The location details help you pinpoint the cave in your plans and take the journey there into account.
Historical sites in the wider Bantul destination
In the wider Bantul destination, Goa Selarong offers a historical focus. The attraction is located in Dusun Kembang Putihan, Kalurahan Guwosari, Kapanewon Pajangan, Kabupaten Bantul. During the guerrilla war against the Dutch from 1825 to 1830, it served as a refuge for Pangeran Diponegoro and his followers.
An earlier period in history is represented at Makam Imogiri. Sultan Agung built the complex between 1632 and 1640. It is located in Dusun Pajimatan, Kalurahan Girirejo, Kecamatan Imogiri, Kabupaten Bantul, and is the burial place of the kings of Mataram and their families, as well as the kings of Surakarta and their families. This allows visitors to explore different historical periods in Bantul.
Museum Sejarah Purbakala Pleret is also part of Bantul’s cultural heritage. It stands on the site of the former Mataram Islamic palace complex, within the Kerta-Plered cultural heritage area. The museum is located on Jalan Raya Pleret in Kapanewon Pleret, Bantul, and officially opened to the public on 10 March 2014.
