Parangtritis: Beach, Legends and Rituals
Accommodation in Parangtritis
Parangtritis brings together Pantai Parangtritis beach and a cultural heritage that gives the place its own world of stories. Pantai Parangtritis is closely linked to the Javanese legend of Nyi Roro Kidul, the Queen of the Southern Ocean. According to the legend, the beach is considered a gateway to her supernatural realm. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Parangtritis, you can also take rituals and storytelling traditions into account when choosing where to stay, alongside your coastal getaway.
Legends and Javanese Rituals
The Upacara Labuhan is held annually at Cepuri Parangkusumo and is organised by both the palace and the local community. Another traditional ritual, Bekti Pertiwi Pisungsung Jaladri, is observed especially in Padukuhan Mancingan. This brings two specific points of reference into focus: an annual ceremony at Cepuri Parangkusumo and a ritual observed especially in Mancingan. The legend of Nyi Roro Kidul adds the story of the Queen of the Southern Ocean’s supernatural realm to this cultural heritage.
Beach, Hot Spring and Getting There
Visitors can ride horses along Pantai Parangtritis. Another option for a bathing trip is the Parangwedang hot spring near Parangtritis, where visitors can bathe for a small fee. Confirm that bathing is available before your visit. This means a horseback ride along the beach and a dip in the hot spring can be considered as separate activities when planning your stay.
From Yogyakarta, the beach can be reached via two road routes: one goes through the village of Kretek, while the other follows a more challenging road through Imogiri and Siluk. If you are considering Parangtritis as a holiday destination, the route there is a practical point of reference. The two routes described differ in their course and in the more challenging nature of the route through Imogiri and Siluk.
Bantul: More on History and Crafts
The wider destination of Bantul also offers historical sites as part of its cultural attractions. Goa Selarong is a historical site in Dusun Kembang Putihan, Kalurahan Guwosari, Kapanewon Pajangan, Kabupaten Bantul. During the guerrilla war against the Dutch from 1825 to 1830, it served as a refuge for Pangeran Diponegoro and his followers. Makam Imogiri is located in Dusun Pajimatan, Kalurahan Girirejo, Kecamatan Imogiri, Kabupaten Bantul. Sultan Agung had the burial site built between 1632 and 1640; it is the resting place of the kings of Mataram and their families, as well as the kings of Surakarta and their families.
The handicrafts of Bantul also have their own distinctive character. At Desa Wisata Krebet in Dusun Krebet, Kelurahan Sendangsari, batik is made on wood rather than fabric. Visitors can learn batik-making at craft galleries or through the tourism village administration. Desa Wisata Wukirsari in Kabupaten Bantul is known as a centre for traditional hand-drawn batik and wayang kulit crafts. Kasongan in Desa Bangunjiwo, Kecamatan Kasihan, Kabupaten Bantul, is a centre for pottery. These different specialities give Bantul’s cultural offerings a different focus from the beach, legends and rituals of Parangtritis.
