Sumbawa Besar offers different perspectives on its history: stilt buildings and wooden architecture stand alongside the history of the sultanate and the memory of notable figures from the past. The buildings and settlements raise different questions about construction methods, political history and changing uses. This gives a culturally focused trip concrete themes, from Istana Dalam Loka to the Bala Datu Ranga Museum.

Wooden Buildings and Their History

Istana Dalam Loka is a wooden palace made of teak, built around 1885 during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Jalaluddin Syah III. At 904 square metres and built as a stilt house, the building brings together several tangible aspects: its material, size and construction can all be considered together. Istana Dalam Loka was renovated in 1985.

Bala Datu Ranga is also a wooden house with characteristic Sumbawa architecture. It was built in 1886 and was the second-largest wooden house after Istana Dalam Loka. The two dates are close together: Istana Dalam Loka was built about a year earlier. Istana Dalam Loka is a teak stilt house with a floor area of 904 square metres; Bala Datu Ranga was the second-largest wooden house after it.

Since 2022, Bala Datu Ranga House has been a museum dedicated to the memory of Abdul Madjid Daeng Matutu, the last prime minister of the Sumbawa Sultanate. The museum is recognised by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia and registered as a museum in West Nusa Tenggara Province in the National Museum Database. The building’s history and culture of remembrance meet here in one building.

Palace Architecture and Sultanate History

Istana Bala Kuning features colonial architecture adapted to tropical conditions. Another historical aspect links the palace to the succession to the throne: the ceremonies for the enthronement of the 18th Sultan of Sumbawa, Dewa Masmawa Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin IV, were held there in 2011. By Sumbawa Regent’s Decree No. 1316 of 2022, Istana Bala Kuning was declared a cultural heritage site. Its architecture, a dated event and its later heritage designation each offer a distinct way to explore the building’s history.

Istana Bala Puti offers another perspective on changing political uses. It was handed over by the Sumbawa Sultanate to the government and is currently used by the Sumbawa Regency Government as Wisma Daerah. Its current use may change.

The history of Kelurahan Bugis also stretches back a long way. The area is one of the oldest settlements in Sumbawa Besar; its development began in the 17th century. This broadens the perspective from individual buildings to the development of a settlement. For travellers interested in local history, the themes on offer include both individual buildings and an older settlement context.

Include Cultural Interests in Your Travel Plans

Istana Dalam Loka is a teak stilt house, while Bala Datu Ranga is a wooden house with characteristic Sumbawa architecture. If you are more interested in the history of the sultanate, the handover of Istana Bala Puti, the 2011 ceremonies at Istana Bala Kuning and the dedication of the Bala Datu Ranga Museum offer different historical connections. These topics provide distinct points of focus rather than imposing a single story on all the buildings.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Sumbawa Besar, your cultural interests can help you decide what to focus on when planning your trip: wooden construction and architecture, sultanate history or the development of older settlements. First choose the topics that make you most curious, then plan the rest of your trip around them.
