West Sumatra: Lakes, Culture and Coast
Accommodation in West Sumatra
West Sumatra offers a wide variety of travel experiences: volcanic lakes and green valleys sit alongside historic places, regional cuisine and the coast. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can start by choosing the focus of your trip: should it centre mainly on landscapes, cultural discoveries, activities on the water or local dishes?
Lakes, valleys and routes
Danau Maninjau is a volcanic lake surrounded by green hills. Visitors can go boating there. This combines a lakeside stay with an activity on the water, while the hills shape the landscape. Danau Singkarak is a large crater lake formed by tectonic activity. It extends across the regencies of Tanah Datar and Solok. The two lakes therefore have different geological descriptions and each has its own geographical setting.
The valleys offer their own distinctive features, too. In Lembah Harau, steep, multicoloured sandstone cliffs, 100 to 500 metres high, surround the gorge. Visitors can explore caves there. The Sarasah Bunta waterfall, considered a tourist attraction, is also located in the Harau area. Ngarai Sianok, in contrast, is a green valley with steep cliffs where visitors can go hiking. If you prefer nature experiences when choosing a holiday rental, these different landscapes can help guide the focus of your trip.
Cultural heritage and regional cuisine
The Ombilin coal mining heritage of Sawahlunto is an extensive industrial ensemble: twelve components are arranged across three functionally connected areas. The historic Ombilin railway is also part of the mining history. It connects the mines to the coastal port across 155 kilometres of mountainous terrain and includes numerous railway bridges and tunnels. This industrial heritage can thus be experienced through an ensemble of several components and a long railway line through mountainous landscapes.
The traditional settlement of Nagari Sijunjung offers a different cultural perspective. It has 76 traditional houses inhabited by nine clans and their sub-clans. The Adityawarman Museum preserves and displays Minangkabau cultural heritage. Its ethnographic collections cover West Sumatra and other regions; its historical and cultural artefacts focus in particular on the history and culture of the Minangkabau and Mentawai. Istano Basa Pagaruyung in Tanah Datar is a replica of the royal palace of Pagaruyung and an icon of cultural tourism in West Sumatra. The historic Jam Gadang clock tower stands in the centre of Bukittinggi.
Those who want to discover regional cuisine will find several named specialities at Desa Wisata Kampuang Minang Nagari Sumpu: visitors can try Rendang Sumpu as well as Rebon, Singgang Sumpu, Pangek Sumpu, Pangek Sasau and Singgang. The selection therefore extends beyond a single dish, giving the culinary side of the trip a focus of its own.
Coast, islands and routes
At Taplau Pantai Padang, a broad sandy beach and calm waves shape the beach experience. The Mentawai Islands offer a different surfing profile: the waters around Sipora and other islands are internationally known for their several surf breaks, and the wave conditions make the islands a surfing destination in Indonesia. Visitors can also learn about Mentawai life on the Mentawai Islands by visiting local communities and traditional Uma houses, and by taking part in activities related to local cultural knowledge and practices.
For travel to Danau Singkarak, the route described from Minangkabau International Airport via Padang Panjang or Solok is relevant. Another notable road is Kelok 44: it winds uphill between the village of Maninjau and Embun Pagi. These routes and destinations offer different starting points for planning a trip; they do not describe the same travel focus. Choose your accommodation search based on whether a lake, culture, the coast or a particular landscape should be at the centre of your stay.
