Rainforests and moss forests, a protected area with striking mountains, and the dive sites of the Lembeh Strait give Bitung City a varied character. Cultural attractions, local specialities and ways to experience the landscape on the water or on foot add to its appeal. When planning your trip, the question is therefore not only what kind of holiday rental you are looking for, but also which focus interests you most: nature and wildlife, snorkelling and diving, or culture and local life.

Rainforest and wildlife in the Tangkoko-Batuangus Nature Reserve

The Tangkoko-Batuangus Nature Reserve is in the North Bitung District of Bitung City and covers about 8,745 hectares. Its landscape includes rainforests and moss forests, as well as two mountains of different heights: Mount Tangkoko reaches 1,109 metres above sea level, while Mount Batuangus is 450 metres high. These figures show how much the elevations vary within the protected area.

The reserve serves as a sanctuary for endemic wildlife. This includes the Celebes crested macaque (Macaca nigra), tarsiers, cuscuses, maleos and hornbills. Those interested in nature and wildlife will find a different focus here from the water-based experiences of the Lembeh Strait. The protected habitats and their inhabitants shape the natural side of Bitung City.

Diving, snorkelling and scenery in the Lembeh Strait

The Lembeh Strait is administratively part of the Bitung City Government and is particularly notable for its designated dive sites: there are 88 in total. The strait’s unique ecosystem includes nudibranchs, flamboyant cuttlefish, mimic octopuses and hairy frogfish. This extends the nature experience beyond forests and mountains to the underwater world.

At Kampung Wisata Pintukota Kecil, visitors can snorkel and dive with rented equipment and an experienced guide to see fish and coral reefs in the Lembeh Strait. The area combines these water activities with other experiences: tourists, particularly those from Indonesia and abroad, use parts of the coconut plantations and dense forest as hiking trails. Visitors can also prepare wine, traditional cakes and local specialities together with the local community.

The scenery is part of the experience at Pantai Kelapa, too, where visitors can camp and enjoy the surroundings. Pantai Kelapa is about 10 minutes away by boat. The Festival Pesona Selat Lembeh includes a parade of decorated boats in the Lembeh Strait.

Cultural sites and local discoveries

In Desa Wisata Lirang, Kelurahan Lirang, Kecamatan Lembeh Utara, Kota Bitung, the Tarian Cakalele dance is a cultural attraction. Wisata Alam Mangrove is a natural attraction there. The two names represent different interests within the same Desa Wisata: cultural tradition on the one hand, and mangrove nature on the other.

Another place with a historical connection is the Monumen Trikora in Batu Lubang, Kecamatan Lembeh Selatan, which is designated as a tourist attraction. The Trikora Monument on Lembeh Island commemorates the struggles associated with Indonesia’s recovery of Papua. The site offers a panoramic view of the Lembeh Strait. History and far-reaching views across the strait come together here.

Getting there and choosing the right holiday rental

Public buses run between Manado and Bitung from the Paal Dua or Karombasan terminals. Ferry services from Bitung run to Pananaru, Siau, Melanguane and Ternate. If you are planning to continue your journey by ferry, this can also factor into your search for a holiday rental.
