Discover Magelang
Accommodation in Magelang
In the municipality of Kota Magelang, an annual city festival, museums, and distinctive local foods are among the cultural discoveries. The wider Magelang destination also offers nature and outdoor activities. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on city history, a festival, or time in the countryside.
Grebeg Gethuk: a festival with distinctive symbols
Grebeg Gethuk is celebrated annually to mark the anniversary of Kota Magelang. The parade includes a gunungan gethuk: a cone-shaped structure decorated with colourful sweet cassava snacks. It also features palawija, agricultural produce from 17 villages, as a symbol of gratitude. The festival also includes a competition for the gunungan, the dance drama “Babad Mahardika,” and various cultural performances. Possible venues include Mantyasih, PDAM, and Magelang Town Square; locations may vary from one edition to the next.
Museums, temples, and local cuisine
The Bumiputera 1912 Museum offers an insight into the history and development of the insurance industry in Indonesia. Its collection includes historical documents dating from 1912, pictures, and simple office equipment from an earlier era. The building was constructed in the Central Javanese Joglo style. The BPK RI Museum is located at Jln. P. Diponegoro No. 1 in Kota Magelang; visitors can learn about the BPK's duties and authority, as well as its work.
The Taruna Abdul Jalil Museum offers guided tours and souvenir shops. Check whether these are available before your visit. Liong Hok Bio Temple serves as a place of worship and a venue for traditions of Chinese origin, including Chinese New Year celebrations with lion dances. A visit therefore covers a range of subjects—from public institutions and museum collections to religious and cultural practices.
Gethuk Pojok Bu Endang is also part of the local food culture: Gethuk has been made since the 1950s, and the point of sale is Pasar Rejowinangun in Kota Magelang. In the wider Magelang destination, Kupat Tahu is another typical local dish. Both names offer a specific culinary reference for your trip planning without requiring you to plan a visit to a particular restaurant.
Plan a city tour and holiday rental
A municipal post dated 7 October 2024 describes a city tour package around Kota Magelang using VW vehicles; 8–10 vehicles were available for it. Extended packages to the surrounding area were also offered, for example to Candi Borobudur, which lies outside the city. The availability of these packages may change. If a tour is important to your trip, check in advance whether a suitable package is offered for your travel dates.
When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to start with the itinerary you have in mind: someone who mainly wants to experience Grebeg Gethuk and museums will plan differently from someone who wants to include nature and activities across the wider Magelang destination.
The wider Magelang destination: nature, art, and activity
Gunung Tidar rises to 503 metres above sea level. Visitors can explore its pine forest or hike up the hill. In local belief, it is considered the “nail of the island of Java”; another traditional belief calls it the “navel of the island of Java.” Grebeg Suro is also held annually in the vicinity of Kebun Raya Gunung Tidar, with a traditional ritual at the summit of Gunung Tidar. Kebun Raya has responsibilities in plant conservation, research, education, tourism, and environmental services.
Taman Kyai Langgeng covers 27.5 hectares and is home to hundreds of rare plant specimens. Facilities available there include a water park, fish spa, flying fox, tandem bicycles, and ATVs; individual offerings may change. The park also serves as a destination for religious tourism. Art enthusiasts can visit the Oei Hong Djien Museum, an art museum with 1,500 works on display, including paintings, sculptures, installations, and ceramic crafts. Its address is Jl. Pangeran Diponegoro No. 74, Magelang, Jawa Tengah.
For activity on the water, Progo Rafting offers white-water rafting along the Progo River. Tourists can also take part in Fun Games, Flying Fox, and paintball there; individual activities may change. By contrast, a visit to Gunung Tidar centres on forest and hiking, while Taman Kyai Langgeng combines plants, leisure activities, and religious tourism. These different focuses can help you choose the experiences you want for your trip and the right holiday rental in Magelang.
