A trip to Pangkalanbuun offers several different themes to explore: court history at Istana Kuning, remembrance at the Monumen Palagan Sambi, and a seaside excursion to Pantai Kubu. The palace is particularly easy to understand through its four main areas and their individually named functions. These clear themes can help you organize cultural sites and destinations in the surrounding area according to your interests, rather than limiting your trip planning to just one kind of experience.

Four areas of Istana Kuning

Istana Kuning has four main areas that reflect different functions at the royal court. Bangsal was the reception area of the royal court, while Rumbang was where the king meditated. Dalem Kuning served as the seat of government and the king’s residence; Pedahiran was the royal dining hall. Reception, meditation, government, and court dining thus emerge as separate aspects of court life. This gives you a clear way to understand the names: each area is associated with its own function, so the significance of the palace need not be reduced to a single image of court history.

Architecture and historical context

Istana Kuning is a stilt building made of Ulin wood; its architecture combines Malay, Chinese, and Dayak influences. “Stilt building” describes its form, Ulin wood its material, while the three influences add to the building’s cultural context. Istana Kuning is considered a legacy of Sultan Imanudin, the ninth prince of the Kutaringin kingdom; his reign is given as 1811 to 1841. The building’s form and its attribution to a ruler bring architectural interest and court history together.

Remembrance and nearby destinations

The Monumen Palagan Sambi offers a different historical perspective. It features a diorama or relief depicting the air force’s battle against the Dutch occupiers. Alongside court history, it therefore offers a memorial site with a clearly defined subject; visitors choosing cultural sites by their content can distinguish between these historical perspectives.

There are various destinations nearby. The village of Kumpai Batu Atas (Kuba) is about 17 kilometers from Pangkalan Bun; Pantai Kubu is about 30 kilometers from Pangkalan Bun. These approximate distances help you locate both destinations and consider them as different points of reference when planning your trip. At Pantai Kubu, a wooden jetty by the sea, relaxing and fishing, and watching fish in the clear water are specific activities to consider. However, at the time of publication, the jetty had burned down and had not been rebuilt. Check in advance whether these activities are possible.

Culture or coast as the focus of your trip

When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by considering the mix of experiences you have planned. Would you mainly like to include court history and remembrance, or would you also like to spend time by the sea? The different destinations and their approximate distances offer a guide to deciding what you would like to focus on during your stay. This lets you tailor your holiday rental search to the trip you have planned.
