Jakarta: City History and Island Worlds
Accommodation in Jakarta
Jakarta offers different perspectives on Indonesia: museums tell stories of seafaring, colonial history and art, while the islands in Jakarta Bay offer a very different focus. Betawi culture and contemporary venues are also part of the city’s character. When choosing your holiday apartment, first consider which of these discoveries you’d like to shape your trip most.
City History in Museums and Buildings
Kota Tua Jakarta, also known as Batavia, extends across the administrative areas of West and North Jakarta. The area includes colonial forts, canals, and government and office buildings. The Jakarta History Museum takes visitors through Jakarta’s history: from prehistoric times and the heyday of the port of Sunda Kelapa, through the colonial era, to the period after independence. Its collection includes 23,500 historical objects and reproductions. The National Museum of Indonesia offers another perspective on the country’s history and culture, with more than 140,000 prehistoric, archaeological, numismatic, ethnographic and ceramic objects.
Those interested in maritime subjects can explore the Museum Bahari’s collections on Indonesian seafaring and fishing, from Sabang to Merauke. The Textile Museum houses batik fabrics, woven textiles, textile-making equipment, mixed collections and up to 1,000 other textiles. The Wayang Museum displays Indonesian and foreign wayang figures and puppets, gamelan ensembles, and wayang paintings. As a cultural heritage museum, Taman Prasasti Museum focuses on the Dutch colonial era; highlights include old grave inscriptions, miniature tombs from 27 Indonesian provinces and antique hearses. The National Monument, or Monas, symbolizes the Indonesian people’s struggle for independence.
Betawi Culture and the Performing Arts
Kampung Setu Babakan is a Betawi cultural village and is described as Jakarta’s last stronghold of Betawi culture. Setu Babakan includes a 32-hectare artificial lake fed by the Ciliwung River. Regional cultural pavilions and themed museums also make Taman Mini Indonesia Indah an educational and recreational destination. Here, you can discover different ways of engaging with culture, from a Betawi cultural village to displays of regional cultures.
Taman Ismail Marzuki is a Jakarta arts and cultural center for theatre, music, dance and visual arts. It includes large and small theatres, galleries, a planetarium, a library and a literature documentation center. Festivals, exhibitions, discussions and performances at national and international levels are held there regularly. Gedung Kesenian Jakarta continues to be actively used for theatre, music, art exhibitions and classical music concerts. Alongside historical collections, these offerings give your trip an artistic and performing-arts dimension.
Sea, Islands and Activities
Kepulauan Seribu National Park is a national marine protected area and a tourist island destination in Jakarta Bay. Kepulauan Seribu comprises more than 110 islands, and visitors are drawn to its marine and island landscapes. The islands appeal to different interests: Pulau Tidung Kecil is dedicated to mangrove cultivation and conservation. Jembatan Cinta connects Pulau Tidung Besar and Pulau Tidung Kecil.
The islands also have a history: Pulau Bidadari is home to Benteng Martello, which dates back to the Dutch colonial era. Pulau Onrust has archaeological remains and historic buildings from that period; the Taman Arkeologi Onrust Museum contains a miniature model of Pulau Onrust. Activities on Pulau Bidadari include snorkeling, fishing, canoeing and banana boat rides. On Pulau Putri, visitors can observe marine life without snorkeling in an underwater tunnel aquarium. The islands offer everything from mangrove conservation and traces of history to activities on and beneath the water.

Relaxation and Leisure in Jakarta
Ancol was developed as an integrated recreation and entertainment area with beaches and sports facilities, and is considered a modern landmark of marine tourism. Dunia Fantasi, also called Dufan, opened there in 1985; the park offers rides on a modern international scale. Pasar Seni Ancol gives artists a space to create and sell their own work. Another kind of leisure activity can be found in the outdoor area of Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, which Jakarta residents use for exercise. When planning your stay, you can choose from a range of options, including museum visits, cultural events, island experiences and leisure activities.
