The collection spans from prehistory to traditions that continue to this day. The museum therefore covers a broad period and has a different focus from Gua Tabuhan: the museum centres on collection objects and their cultural context, while the cave is notable for its formations, sounds and historical connection.

In the wider region, the Song Terus site lies within the Gunung Sewu cultural heritage area. It preserves traces of prehistoric culture and environmental changes spanning hundreds of thousands of years. Finds around Gua Song Terus and in the Gunung Sewu area indicate that people lived there and adapted to their surroundings for hundreds of thousands of years. Pacitan as a Wider Travel Horizon
