Probolinggo: Weekend Market, Mangroves and Traditions
Accommodation in Probolinggo
Probolinggo brings together an early weekend market, religious and local history, and mangrove and beach landscapes. There are also experiences involving animals, plants and water. To plan your trip, it helps to first consider which of these aspects interests you most: a morning market visit, cultural discoveries or time in a waterside landscape.
Weekend Market and Living Traditions
Pasar Tugu takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 to 9 a.m. on the four sides of the streets surrounding Alun-Alun. The market areas are on Jl. Ahmad Yani, Jl. KH. Agus Salim, Jl. Trunojoyo and Jl. KH Mansur. Among other things, food and children’s entertainment are on offer. The early time slot gives the visit a clear place in your day’s schedule; check the weekend market dates again before your trip.
Another expression of living tradition is Kerapan Sapi Brujul from Kota Probolinggo. The cattle race takes place after the harvest on water-rich agricultural land. On October 18, 2019, Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture designated the tradition as intangible cultural heritage. Its connection to the harvest and the landscape also offers insight into a local practice that is quite different from a market visit or a museum tour.
Religious Sites and History
The heritage-listed Klenteng Tri Dharma Sumber Naga has existed since 1865 and is more than 150 years old. It serves as a place of worship for Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. This combination of a long history and three religious functions makes the temple a notable place if you are interested in Probolinggo’s cultural heritage.
The museum at Jl. dr. Moh Saleh No. 1, Kelurahan Tisnonegaran, Kecamatan Kanigaran, also has historical significance: it was once the private home of Dr. Mohamad Saleh, considered Probolinggo’s first indigenous doctor. Sumber Ardi is in Kelurahan Wonoasih, Kecamatan Wonoasih. According to local accounts, its rectangular pool, covering around 150 m², is considered a remnant of the Dutch colonial era. Alongside religious history, you can encounter reminders of earlier ways of life and architecture.
Mangroves, Beach and Water
Bee Jay Bakau Resort (BJBR) is a five-hectare mangrove ecotourism area in Pelabuhan Perikanan Pantai Mayangan. At Pantai Permata, the landscape includes a beach, Cemara Udang trees, a mangrove forest and boats. These two places give the coast a different character from the historic sites in the city; if you are interested in mangroves and water, they offer a distinct focus for your trip planning.
Water is also at the heart of several activities. At Sumber Sentong, visitors can try a fish foot therapy with red tilapia in a pool: they dip their feet in the water and feel the fish nibble at them. On the western side of Pelabuhan Perikanan Pantai Mayangan, a bathing or wading activity is called “wisata kum kkum.” By contrast, the pool in the GOR Mastrip complex is designed for swimming training and competitions; it has Olympic-standard dimensions.
Leisure with Animals, Plants and Exercise
Taman Wisata Studi Lingkungan (TWSL) is geared towards family outings featuring animals and a variety of plant species. A park on Jalan Semeru in Kelurahan Triwung Kidul, Kecamatan Kademangan, offers space for family recreation, playing, relaxing, sports, artistic activities and use of a reading garden. The two attractions appeal to different interests: animals and plants are the focus at TWSL, while the park offers several ways to spend time being active or enjoying quieter activities.
Kampung Nila features fishing ponds stocked with nila, mujair and milkfish. Suitable parking and adequate access are also available. This makes the visit different from the fish foot therapy at Sumber Sentong: there, visitors dip their feet into a pool, while here the focus is on fishing ponds. The different water experiences can therefore be considered according to the activity you prefer, without combining them into a single outing.
Choosing the Right Focus for Your Trip
If you are looking for a holiday rental in Probolinggo, your planned activities can help guide your choice of accommodation: would you like to experience the early weekend market, are you mainly interested in the cultural heritage, or do you prefer mangroves, beaches and water-based activities? For families, TWSL, the park on Jalan Semeru and the children’s entertainment at Pasar Tugu offer specific options.
