Discover Donorojo
Accommodation in Donorojo
Donorojo can be linked to a specific geological feature: Luweng Ombo cave, located in the wider region. Pacitan, as the broader travel destination, adds coastlines, karst landscapes and traditions to this picture. Before searching for a holiday rental, consider whether natural formations, water or culture should shape the character of your trip.
Luweng Ombo: dimensions and formation
The cave is located in Kecamatan Donorojo. It has a diameter of 50 metres and is about 65 metres deep, measured from the local ground surface. Its passages are 1,112 metres long in total. At the bottom is a sloping, horizontal passage with an underground river.
Luweng Ombo developed from a doline shaped by collapse and dissolution processes. This adds information about its formation to the measurements. For nature enthusiasts, it offers a specific geological subject: the cave’s dimensions, its underground passages and the processes involved in its formation.
Landscape and coastline in the broader travel destination of Pacitan
Most of Kabupaten Pacitan consists of limestone mountains belonging to the Pegunungan Kidul mountain range. Kabupaten Pacitan is also part of the UNESCO-recognised Gunung Sewu Geopark, which is a member of the Global Geoparks Network. The beaches of Kabupaten Pacitan also shape the landscape, offering white sand, striking karst cliffs and the surf of the Indian Ocean.
The coastal destinations showcase different sides of this travel destination. Pantai Buyutan combines white sand, clear seawater, cliffs and coral rocks. Visitors can walk along the beach, relax to the sound of the waves and photograph the coastal landscape. Pantai Klayar is known for white sand, blue sea, rocky cliffs and a largely unspoilt coastline. Pantai Pancer attracts surfers because of its relatively large waves; conditions depend on the weather and the surf.
Another way to experience Pacitan is a guided boat trip on the Sungai Maron. It covers a distance of 4.5 kilometres and takes about 45 minutes. The options within this broader travel destination therefore range from coastal scenery and beach activities to a river trip of a set duration.
Culture and traditions in Pacitan
Wayang Beber Pacitan was recognised as national intangible cultural heritage by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture in 2015. In this form of performance, painted scrolls are unfurled in front of a dalang, who narrates the scenes depicted. Five people take part: four play the rebab, kendang, kenong in Laras Slendro and gong; the fifth takes the role of the dalang. The oldest Wayang Beber is located in Desa Karang Talun, Kelurahan Gedompol, Kecamatan Donorojo, Kabupaten Pacitan.
Another recognised tradition is Kethek Ogleng from Desa Tokawi, Kecamatan Nawangan. It was recognised as national intangible cultural heritage in the performing arts category in 2019. Ceprotan, in turn, is a tradition passed down among the residents of Desa Sekar, Kecamatan Donorojo. It takes place annually in the month of Longkang according to the Javanese calendar. Anyone wishing to include this tradition in their plans should therefore take the Javanese calendar into account.
