Central Sulawesi appeals to travellers who want to focus on nature, culture and history: Lake Poso, tropical forests, waterfalls, prehistoric megaliths and traditional crafts offer different ways to explore the region. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on. Whether you prioritise landscapes, cultural traditions, historical sites or island activities will influence which places and accommodation locations might suit you.

Lake, Forest and Waterfalls

The centre of Lake Poso is crystal blue, surrounded by a greenish hue. Soft white and golden sandy beaches line the lake. The annual Danau Poso Festival showcases the natural landscape and cultural diversity of the communities around ancient Lake Poso. Both the landscape and cultural traditions are therefore part of the festival’s theme.

At Air Terjun Saluopa waterfall, water rushes down between rocks in twelve cascades. Visitors can also explore the surrounding area, which is rich in flora and fauna. In Lore Lindu National Park, tropical forests and numerous endemic plant and animal species take centre stage. The park offers trekking through these forests. If you would like to combine nature experiences with exercise, this is an alternative to a stay focused mainly on lake and waterfall landscapes.

Megaliths, Museum and Crafts

The Bada Valley is a historical tourism area known for its megalithic statues, which are several thousand years old. The Lore-Lindu Megaliths are a prehistoric site featuring large stones of great archaeological value. Both offer a glimpse into the region’s early history, but refer to different named places. You can therefore include them in your trip plans as separate cultural history interests.

The Museum Sulawesi Tengah houses approximately 812 collection items related to Central Sulawesi’s cultural diversity and natural heritage. It also serves as an informal educational venue and a place for cultural recreation. For another glimpse into regional culture, there is Tenun Donggala: this traditional cloth is handwoven using manual techniques and features distinctive patterns. As for food, Kaledo is a dish from Central Sulawesi. It is made from beef bones and usually served with boiled cassava.

Festivals, Islands and Activities

The Danau Lindu Festival takes place in the village of Tomado in Sigi Regency and combines ecotourism, cultural tourism and agrotourism. Together with the Danau Poso Festival, it showcases different cultural and landscape themes: in Tomado, agro- and ecotourism are also part of the festival, while Danau Poso presents the natural landscape and communities around the lake.

Bukit Matantimali is a paragliding site considered one of the best in Southeast Asia. On the Togean Islands, snorkelling is one of the main attractions. Kadidiri Island lies at the tip of the Gulf of Tomini in Central Sulawesi. Ampana is the usual port for the Togean Islands; Palu is the starting point for visiting Central Sulawesi’s attractions and natural wonders. When looking for a holiday rental, it is helpful to decide on your main focus in advance: Palu and Ampana play different roles in getting your bearings.
