Discover Surakarta: Palaces, Batik and Local Food
Accommodation in Surakarta
Surakarta offers different ways to explore its urban history and everyday life: the Kasunanan Palace tells the story of a historic reconstruction, Kampung Batik Laweyan is characterised by high walls and narrow alleys, and Pasar Gedhe offers traditional dishes alongside everyday goods. There is also a city tour aboard a 19th-century steam locomotive. When planning your holiday, you can choose from different focuses, including cultural history, the cityscape, markets and a train ride.
Palace history and local traditions
The Kasunanan Palace was built in 1744 by Susuhan Pakubuwono II as a replacement for the Kartasura Palace, which had been destroyed in 1743 during the Geger Pecinan uprising. The palace’s origins are therefore directly connected to a turning point in the city’s history. The name Sekaten also offers a cultural point of entry: locally, it is associated with Syahadatain, the Islamic declaration of faith. This local interpretation of the name adds a linguistic and religious perspective to the events surrounding the palace.
Batik and historical collections
The main building, nDalem Wuryaningratan, is part of the Museum Batik Danar Hadi cultural complex. High walls and narrow alleys characterise Kampung Batik Laweyan. A named building within a museum complex and the distinctive architecture of the batik district thus represent different themes: a main building in one case, and the streets and alleys in the other.
The historical collections of Pura Mangkunegaran offer another perspective on the past. They include jewellery, heirlooms, wayang figures and musical instruments, as well as old books from the Majapahit and Mataram periods, kept in the Rekso-Pustoko Library. For those interested in different forms of cultural heritage, these collections and books offer further topics to explore when planning a trip, alongside palace history and batik.
Market dishes and everyday goods
Pasar Gedhe combines the sale of everyday goods with a diverse selection of food. The food sold there includes vegetables and fruit; traditional dishes include risol Solo, pastel, lumpia and grontol, as well as cabuk rambak, klepon, es dawet telasih and jamu. The goods and food on offer may vary. For travellers interested in both everyday market life and local dishes, Pasar Gedhe thus offers two perspectives on the same place.
Explore Surakarta by steam train
Sepur Kluthuk Jaladara can carry up to 80 passengers and uses the C1218 steam locomotive, built in Germany in 1896. The route, approximately 5.6 kilometres long, runs from Purwosari Station along Jalan Slamet Riyadi. Along the way, the train passes Lodji Gandrung, Sriwedari Park, the Radyapustaka Museum, the Museum Batik Danar Hadi and Kampung Batik Kauman; the ride ends at Solo Station. The locomotive and route give the city tour a historical and geographical context. As the train service and its availability may change, it is worth checking the current timetable before planning your trip.
When choosing your holiday apartment, consider which of these interests you would like to shape your trip: palace and collection history, batik and the cityscape, market dishes or a ride on Jaladara.
