Jepara combines a world of water at Pantai Kartini with cultural sites and island excursions. At Kura-Kura Ocean Park, the attractions range from a large aquarium to a touch pool; visitors can also take motorboats from Pantai Kartini to Pulau Panjang. The museum, Benteng VOC and woodcarving offer other ways to explore the area.

Aquatic attractions and boat crossing from Pantai Kartini

Kura-Kura Ocean Park is located within the Pantai Kartini complex. Its large aquarium area includes sharks, hawksbill turtles, rays, Giant Trevally (GT), snappers, groupers and pufferfish, among others. There is also a touch pool with freshwater fish, especially tame turtles that visitors can touch. This brings aquarium viewing and a direct encounter at the touch pool together.

Pantai Kartini is also the departure point for the crossing to Pulau Panjang: visitors can reach the island by motorboat. Those who want to include both aquatic attractions and a visit to an island in their trip have two different kinds of excursion to choose from. When planning a holiday rental in Jepara, it is worth first considering whether Pantai Kartini and the boat crossing fit into the days you have planned for your holiday.

Museum, Benteng VOC and woodcarving

The R.A. Kartini Museum has four exhibition rooms dedicated to R.A. Kartini, old Jepara, Dar Oes Salam and handicrafts. A visit therefore takes you through several subject areas rather than focusing on just one aspect of local history. The museum offers a different way to explore Jepara than Benteng VOC, which is also called Benteng Kompeni.

Benteng VOC is located in Dusun Ujung Batu, Kelurahan Ujung Batu, Kecamatan Jepara. It stands on a hill on the shore of the Java Sea. Their settings give the fort and the museum different emphases: here, the seaside surroundings shape the place, while there, the exhibition rooms provide the thematic framework. Nearby, in the wider Jepara area, is Desa Mulyoharjo, a centre for wood sculpture and woodcarving. This adds a living craft tradition to the cultural picture, without suggesting that the museum, fort and craft centre offer the same experience.

Pulau Panjang and the wider island region

Visitors can follow a walking trail on Pulau Panjang. The island’s central tropical forest serves as a resting and breeding ground for seabirds. The motorboat crossing from Pantai Kartini thus goes hand in hand with an island walk and a glimpse into the birds’ habitat.

The wider Jepara travel destination also includes the Kepulauan Karimunjawa, around 90 kilometres north of Jepara. The archipelago comprises 27 islands in the Java Sea; part of its area belongs to Karimunjawa National Park. Activities there include snorkelling, diving, easy trekking and wildlife watching. Mangrove forests, coastal forests and small islands shape the landscape. This is a different part of a trip from an excursion to Pulau Panjang or a visit to the aquarium at Pantai Kartini.

The crossing to the Kepulauan Karimunjawa takes an average of around three to four hours by the Siginjai ferry, the Express Bahari speedboat or a Pelni ship; the duration depends on the type of vessel and weather conditions. Check the current departure times for your travel dates.

Crafts across the wider Jepara destination

Crafts are also a defining cultural reference point across the wider Jepara destination. Tenun Troso is a traditional woven textile from Desa Troso in Kecamatan Pecangaan. It is made using the ikat technique on non-mechanical looms and features a wide variety of patterns. Thus, two different craft traditions sit side by side in the wider Jepara area: wood sculpture and woodcarving in Desa Mulyoharjo, and ikat weaving from Desa Troso. This broadens the cultural perspective beyond the city’s attractions.

Choose the right focus for your stay

When looking for a holiday rental in Jepara, you can use your excursion plans as a guide: are the aquarium and motorboat crossing your main priorities, or would you like to include the museum, Benteng VOC and local crafts? If your trip also includes the Kepulauan Karimunjawa, the crossing and its variable duration need to be factored into your plans. This way, you can choose a location based on the experiences you actually want to include in your trip.
