Cilacap Between Coast and History
Accommodation in Cilacap
In Cilacap, coastal traditions meet a complex history of fortifications. At Pantai Teluk Penyu, the connection to the sea is especially clear: the beach is located in Kelurahan Cilacap, Kecamatan Cilacap Selatan. The annual Festival Nelayan is also part of the coastal community’s traditions; during the festival, thanks are offered to the sea.
Coast, Festival and Boat Trip
The waves at Pantai Teluk Penyu are relatively small. Tourist boats take visitors from this beach to the island of Nusakambangan. If a crossing is part of your travel plans, check in advance whether it is currently operating.
The Festival Nelayan connects coastal traditions with a public procession. At the 2026 festival, the procession was the highlight: a Jolen procession went from Pendopo Wijayakusuma Cakti to Pantai Teluk Penyu, where the offering to the sea was made. This route describes the 2026 festival; it does not indicate how future festivals will proceed. The distinction is useful for planning your trip: the annual tradition provides a recurring cultural framework, while the specific procession described here was tied to a particular edition.
Benteng Pendem: Construction History and Changing Uses
Benteng Pendem was built in several stages between 1861 and 1879. Its original name was Kustbatterij Op De Landtong Te Tjilatjap, referring to a fortification in Cilacap that projects out towards the sea. The long construction period and the name offer two different ways to explore the site’s history: one through its construction, the other through the name used at the time.
The fort also changed hands and uses several times. The Dutch military used Benteng Pendem until 1942; it was then under Japanese control until 1945. After that, the Indonesian armed forces took it over until 1965. After 1965, the site fell into disrepair, and almost the entire structure was covered by earth. The local population then gave the fort the name Benteng Pendem. As part of the wider Cilacap destination, it has been managed again since 1986 and has been considered a tourist attraction ever since.
More Highlights in the Wider Cilacap Destination
Other places and themes also add to the picture of the wider Cilacap destination. The Soesilo Soedarman Museum in Desa Gentasari preserves the general’s personal collection. It includes military equipment, a maritime patrol aircraft and the family gamelan; the museum also displays shadow puppets from around the 18th century. If you are interested in collections as well as fortifications, this offers another way to explore history and culture.
Regional natural attractions include Wisata Hutan Payau in Desa Tritih Kulon, Kecamatan Cilacap Utara, about four kilometres from the centre of Cilacap. Mangroves shape the vegetation, and the habitat is home to mudskippers, fiddler crabs, pistol shrimp and various bird species, among others. This natural environment is markedly different from the beach and seascape at Teluk Penyu.
Culture and cuisine also offer specific points of interest: Tari Jalungmas combines movements in the style of Jaipong with traditional Gending in the Banyumas style and is accompanied by Banyumas Calung gamelan. Brekecek Pathak Jahan is a spicy dish made with Jahan fish; Gembus is made from cassava and shaped like a doughnut. These examples offer different highlights—dance and music on the one hand, regional ingredients and dishes on the other.
When choosing a holiday rental in Cilacap, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your trip: coastal traditions and Teluk Penyu, the history of Benteng Pendem, or other destinations in the wider Cilacap area. This way, your search reflects your actual travel interests without grouping different places together as a single sightseeing area.
