Bengkulu between Coast and History
Accommodation in Bengkulu
The coast and its history give Bengkulu two distinct reasons to explore. At Pantai Panjang, white sand, a gently sloping beach and its position facing the Indian Ocean shape the landscape. Houses associated with Ir. Soekarno and Fatmawati, along with Benteng Marlborough, offer a connection to historic landmarks. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: time at the beach, cultural history, or a combination of both.
Pantai Panjang: Beach, Shade and Sunset
Pantai Panjang has white sand and a gently sloping beach. The coastal area is used for leisurely walks and jogging, both in the morning and in the afternoon. Rows of beach casuarina trees, also known as Australian pines, line the coast and create a naturally shaded path. Walking by the beach and following a shaded path are therefore among the defining features of this stretch of coast.
Pantai Panjang faces west towards the Indian Ocean and is considered a popular place to watch the sunset. If you enjoy ending the day by the sea, the beach’s orientation offers a clear connection to the sunset. Activities in the water also vary: visitors can play in shallow areas of the beach, while surfing is possible at selected spots with stronger waves. Surfing is therefore limited to certain areas and is not a description of the entire beach.
Historic Memorial Sites and the Fort’s History
Rumah Pengasingan Bung Karno was Ir. Soekarno’s residence in Bengkulu during his exile from 1938 to 1942. Soekarno was the first president of the Republic of Indonesia. Another historic site is Rumah Fatmawati Soekarno, where Soekarno and Fatmawati met before their marriage. The two houses thus represent different chapters in their history: Soekarno’s exile in Bengkulu and the meeting of the couple who would later marry.
Benteng Marlborough adds another historical highlight. The British East India Company (EIC) built the fort between 1713 and 1719. Today, it is managed as a cultural heritage area and used as a tourist attraction, with exhibition rooms, audiovisual facilities and gardens. These features link the fort’s construction history with its current use as a cultural site.
The Annual Tabot Festival
The Sports Center in Pantai Panjang is one of the venues for the annual Tabot Festival. The festival commemorates the Ashura event, associated with the deaths of Hasan and Husain, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandsons, in the month of Muharram in the Hijri calendar. Tabot adds a recurring cultural event to Bengkulu’s coastal and historical attractions. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.
