Belitung combines pale granite rocks and clear water with island experiences, nature watching and a diverse culture. At Pantai Tanjung Tinggi, fine white sand and very clear seawater meet huge granite rocks along the coast. The beach is also known as Pantai Laskar Pelangi: in 2008, it served as a filming location for the movie “Laskar Pelangi.” Its sheltered-bay setting and rock formations create very calm waves, which are considered safe for swimming.

Granite Coast and Island Experiences

Another coastal landscape awaits at Pantai Tanjung Kelayang, with fine white sand, clear turquoise-green water and large granite formations. Here you can swim, snorkel and canoe. From the beach, you can visit nearby small islands such as Pulau Lengkuas. There, a lighthouse built in 1882 is still used as a navigation aid. Snorkeling is one of the favorite activities on Pulau Lengkuas; tropical fish and coral reefs inhabit the surrounding waters. An island visit therefore offers both a striking landmark and an underwater world to explore.

Pulau Kepayang also combines nature experiences in and around the water: visitors can snorkel and explore the mangrove forest. Experiences also include a sea turtle conservation station. There, you can observe conservation work; visitors can also release hatchlings into the sea. If you are especially interested in coasts and islands, you will find a range of themes here to help plan your own outings, from snorkeling to the mangrove forest.

The granite landscape is also on display at the Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark: massive, pale granite blocks rise from crystal-clear water to form a landscape of granite arches. Near the destination lies Danau Kaolin. Its turquoise-green water stands out against the white kaolin clay; the lake formed in an abandoned kaolin mining area.

Rainforest, Trails and Wildlife Watching

Bukit Peramun offers a different natural setting. From the summit, you can enjoy views of the sea; tropical rainforest and huge granite rocks also shape the panoramas. Designated trekking trails run through the area. Rare plants and distinctive rainbow lorises are also found there. Another wildlife highlight is the Belitung tarsier (Cephalopachus bancanus saltator), a species endemic to the island. It occurs in dry scrubland and secondary forests. At Tebat Rasau, visitors can observe wild animals in their natural habitat. These natural sites therefore appeal to different interests: designated trails, scenic views, or observing animals and plants.

A 650-meter-long path runs through the Kuale Granite Mangrove Forest. Its stated length makes it a clearly defined route for planning your day, without implying a walking time. When looking for a holiday apartment in Belitung, you can first consider whether coastal and island experiences, trekking and landscapes, or wildlife watching will be the focus of your trip. Take these interests into account when choosing where to stay.

Culture, History and Local Cuisine

Belitung’s culture can be seen in its museums, historic sites and living traditions. Andrea Hirata’s Museum of Words uses a replica of Muhammadiyah Gantung Elementary School as its concept and is located near the original school, which served as a filming location. The UPT Museum Pemerintah Kabupaten Belitung preserves local history, culture and artifacts relating to Belitung’s social life and natural resources, as well as its history of tin mining. Open Pit Kampit, in turn, is a former open-pit tin mine from the Dutch colonial period. Vihara Yuddhayana in Damar is said to be several centuries old and has existed since 1747.

The Sawang tradition of Muang Jong also offers insight into local culture: during the ritual, a miniature boat loaded with offerings is set adrift at sea. It expresses gratitude and asks for the safety of the fishermen. Traditional dances and Gambus music are part of cultural tourism in Desa Wisata Kreatif Terong.

Belitung Culinary Adventure combines local food with social encounters and cooking: participants sample local dishes, learn how they are prepared and meet members of the local community. In a traditional kitchen, they prepare and taste local dishes. If culture and cuisine are important to your trip, these experiences can help shape your choice of holiday apartment and the regional focus that suits you. You can also include Membalong as another place to consider when planning your regional vacation.
