Banda Aceh brings together striking mosque architecture and historic buildings with remembrance of the 2004 tsunami. When choosing a holiday rental in Banda Aceh, start by asking yourself what you are most interested in: architecture and history, or the places of remembrance related to the tsunami? These different themes give the city a distinct character to consider when planning your trip.

Architecture, Education and History

The present-day building of Masjid Raya Baiturrahman features a Mughal Revival style, seven black domes and eight minarets. Its distinctive forms make the architecture easy to appreciate, while the style offers another way to understand it. The mosque was built during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607–1636) and was a centre of religious education in the Nusantara. The features of the present-day building thus sit alongside its historical role in religious education. The mosque is also part of the story of the tsunami: it sustained only minor damage in 2004 and temporarily served as a refuge for survivors.

At Pinto Khop, architecture is also made tangible through function. The domed gate was built during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda and connected the palace with Taman Putroe Phang. Gunongan, also built in the 17th century during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607–1636), offers a different emphasis: the hexagonal, flower-shaped structure has three levels, with an upright, crown-like pillar on the main level. Together, the two structures offer different perspectives: Pinto Khop foregrounds the connection between the palace and the garden, while Gunongan draws attention to its geometry, levels and crown-like pillar.

Remembering the Tsunami

The Aceh Tsunami Museum focuses on the Indian Ocean earthquake and its consequences. It features an electronic simulation, photographs of victims, and accounts and testimonies from survivors. The second floor has a library, simulation rooms and a 4D room. Unlike the buildings, whose distinctive features lie in their style, form and former function, the museum focuses on representations of the earthquake and the testimonies of those affected.

Another memorial to the 2004 tsunami is a ship in Gampong Lampulo, in Kecamatan Kuta Alam. The wave carried it into a residential area and left it stranded among houses; the Banda Aceh city administration preserves the ship in remembrance of the tsunami. Unlike the museum, with its range of exhibits, this memorial centres on a single object carried to this location by the event.

Taman Sari and Travel Planning

Taman Sari in Banda Aceh also adds a park to the cityscape. It has a large, well-maintained garden, free play equipment for children and free public Wi-Fi. If you are planning a trip with children, the play equipment offers a specific point of interest alongside mosque architecture, historic buildings and remembrance.
