Lobito is shaped by the more than 10-kilometre-long Restinga, the harbour bay and the lighthouse. White-sand beaches with clear water line the peninsula from Colina da Saudade to the Ponto Final Lighthouse; they face either the Atlantic or the city bay. The Restinga is considered a landmark of Lobito. To put the importance of this coastal area in perspective: it plays a role for Lobito comparable to that of Ilha do Cabo for Luanda.

The Restinga and lighthouse on the bay

The Lobito Lighthouse stands on cliffs on the eastern side of the entrance to Lobito harbour and bay. It lies opposite the tip of the Restinga and north of the city of the same name in Benguela Province. This setting makes the bay, peninsula and lighthouse prominent landmarks for a stay on the coast of Lobito.

The route to the lighthouse begins on the Restinga do Lobito with a boat trip to the opposite shore of the bay. This is followed by a walk of about 40 minutes, starting at sea level and climbing to a rise of just over 100 metres. Check the current booking and package details for the route before making plans.

Coastal routes with different conditions

Another coastal option in the vicinity of Lobito is Praia da Hanha. The beach is used mainly by fishermen and the local community. A sturdy vehicle is needed for the final stretch, preferably one with four-wheel drive. The descent follows a narrow, rocky path. During the rainy season, sand is often washed away, exposing more stones.

When planning, it is helpful to note the difference between these two coastal routes: the route to the lighthouse involves a boat crossing and a walk of around 40 minutes. At Praia da Hanha, by contrast, access depends on having a suitable vehicle, negotiating the rocky descent and accounting for changes to the beach during the rainy season. This can help you consider which kind of coastal experience suits your plans without treating the two routes as equivalent.

Architecture and history in Lobito

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Arrábida was designed by Vasco Regaleira and is inspired by traditional Portuguese architecture. Its arcades give the church a tropical accent. The combination of Portuguese architectural style and this distinctive accent makes it a notable cultural feature of Lobito.

The old sea gates are also among the city's historic sites. They are located at the entrance to Lobito in Lobito Bay. In 2024, an itinerary for tourists travelling on the Rovos Rail train included visits to the boat Zaire and the Portas do Mar. These named stops offer a dated glimpse of an itinerary from that time.

In the municipality of the same name in Benguela Province, the collection of the Lobito Ethnographic Museum is considered a reflection of Angola's ethnocultural diversity. A look at the collection therefore complements the architecture and historic sites with a perspective on the country's diversity.

A closer look at Benguela Province

Beyond Lobito, Benguela Province offers its own regional setting. A QR code initiative in the province provides information by mobile phone about the history, features and cultural significance of the monuments included in the project. The information is available in Portuguese and English; the initiative aims to make the experience more accessible and interactive for local and international visitors.

Praia Morena is also part of this broader destination: the Atlantic beach is in the city of Benguela. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo is also located there. It was founded in the mid-17th century and classified as a National Historic Monument; it was built in the mid-18th century. Its design reflects the spirit and aesthetics of its time, associated with a high point in Portuguese art and the splendour of overseas trade under King João V.

When choosing a holiday rental in Lobito, you can start with the focus of your trip: the Restinga and lighthouse route offer coastal scenery and a walk, while the church, sea gates and museum provide cultural points of interest. If you also include Benguela Province, Praia Morena and the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo offer distinct regional points of interest.
