A notable cultural heritage feature of Cela is the Igreja Matriz de Waku Kungo. The church is classified as National Historical and Cultural Heritage and was built in the second half of the 20th century to a design by architect Fernando Batalha. It therefore combines a specific history of construction with its national heritage classification. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Cela, you can consider whether architectural history and culture should be among the main focuses of your stay.

The Casa da cultura in Waku Kungo adds a different, time-specific dimension. Until a few years before the description was written, it offered classes in theatre, music, traditional dances and capoeira. At the time described, the facility was closed; only the part of the building with a stage was still being used by local theatre groups. The two cultural themes thus differ: the church is chiefly associated with its history of construction and heritage classification, while the Casa da cultura is associated with its former classes and its use by theatre groups at the time.

Local produce is also among the topics described in Waku Kungo. Some rural communities have resumed wax production and produce honey. The villages of Jamba Kipuko and Canjombe, as well as the FestiWaku agricultural fair in the city, are named as places where these products are sold. If you would like to include this aspect in your travel plans, check the fair dates and the availability of the products in advance.

A broader look at Kwanza-Sul

The wider destination of Kwanza-Sul offers further cultural themes. The Ulu Upe beach festival brought thousands of people to the Marginal do Sumbe on a Friday, September 27. It marked the 107th anniversary of Cuanza Sul Province. The Cuanza-Sul Music Festival was announced for September 19–21, 2025, at the Marginal do Sumbe. From June 7 to 9, the Centro de Ciência de Luanda held a moon-observation event in Sumbe to promote astronomy in the community and spark the interest of young people and the public.

Historic sites are also part of this regional picture. As part of organised visits for National Culture Day celebrations, a group of visitors toured the Fortaleza, Vasco da Gama and Largo dos Pescadores in the municipality of Sumbe. The ruins of Fortim do Kicombo are also located in the municipality of Sumbe.

Natural attractions are spread across different municipalities: Cachoeiras do Binga is on the Keve River in Conda. The Caculo Cabaça waterfalls are in Libolo and, according to the province’s tourism inventory, are among the sites of tourist interest. The thermal and medicinal waters of Tokota are in Conda, and the medicinal waters of Catanda are in Seles. In Sumbe, Kicombo, Carimba and Chiculcua beaches, as well as the beach at Rio Tapado, are considered suitable for swimming; check local conditions before swimming.

This priority can help you tailor your holiday-rental search to the focus of your trip.
