Hammam Chott lies in the southern suburbs of Tunis. Its long beach invites you to relax in summer. Seawater is part of the landscape, and Hammam Chott offers views of Green Mountain. The beach and the view give the place two distinctive features: summer relaxation on the coast and striking mountain scenery.

Roman history in the wider destination of Ben Arous

The ancient city of Oudhna is a distinct cultural and historical highlight in the wider destination of Ben Arous. Oudhna probably existed before Roman rule in Africa, possibly as early as the time of the indigenous Berbers of North Africa. At the end of the 1st century BC, it was founded as a colony for veterans of the Roman 13th Legion. The colony was called Uthina and reached its heyday in the 2nd century AD, particularly under Hadrian. Thus, a possible early history and the dated founding as a Roman veterans’ colony are linked chronologically.

Among Oudhna’s buildings is an amphitheatre, partly cut into a hill on the northeastern edge of the city. It has room for about 16,000 spectators. The House of Ikarios is of a different scale: it covers about 2,300 square metres and has more than 30 rooms. Its mosaic floor depicts a grape harvest; the central image shows Dionysus giving Ikarios a vine. The contrast between a large venue for spectators and a private home offers two different perspectives on the ancient city, while the mosaic adds a specific mythological scene.

Oudhna’s large public baths are a symmetrical building of the imperial type, covering about 10,000 square metres. Its two levels served different purposes: the upper level contained hot and cold rooms, while firewood was stored below. An aqueduct supplied Oudhna with water, including to the baths. Together, the building’s design, use of space and water supply show how different parts of the ancient infrastructure were interconnected. The archaeological site also includes an ancient theatre and the Temple of the Capitol. Large public cisterns stood southwest of the forum.

Nature trails in the wider destination of Ben Arous

Boukornine National Park offers a different focus. Three purpose-built visitor trails cover different themes: a general discovery trail, a trail exploring the park’s plant and animal diversity, and a hiking trail. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Choosing the right focus when looking for a holiday apartment

The deciding factor in choosing a location is which travel interest matters most to you. Beach and scenery define Hammam Chott; the Roman buildings in Oudhna and the trails in Boukornine National Park are part of the wider destination of Ben Arous. If you are mainly looking for a summer beach setting, focus your search on a holiday apartment in Hammam Chott. If ancient history or nature trails are your priority, consider these as separate focal points.
