Two very different themes meet around Selem: the coastal landscape and history of nearby Mangapwani, and the natural diversity of the wider Zanzibar North area. These experiences relate to different places and scales. Keeping them distinct can help with planning your holiday: rather than assuming there is one uniform picture of the area, you can sort out your interests and consider which side of the region you would like to explore more closely.

Coast and history in nearby Mangapwani

Mangapwani is considered relatively remote and therefore peaceful and less visited. Its golden beaches are lined with palms and screw pines. The plants frame the coastal landscape, giving it more character than a simple description of its colour. If you like to plan around landscape experiences, you can therefore consider Mangapwani as a specific coastal focus.

Another aspect of Mangapwani is the Mangapwani Slave Chambers. Built out of a cave around 1880, they were connected to the coast. The site thus combines a specific history of construction with a clearly defined coastal connection. This sets it apart thematically from a simple description of the beach: the landscape and the history can be considered as two separate reasons to include Mangapwani in your travel plans.

Forest and biodiversity in Zanzibar North

In the wider destination of Zanzibar North, Kiwengwa Forest lies in the northeast of Zanzibar’s main island, in its northern region. It is the last remaining large forest area and represents the biodiversity of this area. The forest provides a habitat for several endemic and rare plant and animal species. Here, forest ecology and biodiversity take centre stage—a different natural setting from the coastal features of Mangapwani.

The Kiwengwa/Pongwe Forest Reserve brings together further natural features. Ancient baobab trees grow there, and the reserve is home to more than 150 rare medicinal plant species used in traditional Zanzibari medicine. It also provides important habitat for the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey. Underground limestone caves with stalactites and stalagmites, as well as coral rock formations, broaden the picture beyond plant and animal life. Botany, geology and animal habitats thus offer different perspectives on the nature of Zanzibar North.

Locally guided tours are offered in the Kiwengwa/Pongwe Forest Reserve, supporting the village economy and conservation efforts. If such a tour is important to your plans, check its availability in advance.

Choosing the right focus for your trip

When choosing a holiday rental in Selem, the focus you want for your trip can make the difference. If you are mainly interested in nearby Mangapwani, the coast and its history take centre stage. If forest, biodiversity and geology are your priorities, the natural attractions of the wider Zanzibar North area offer a different point of reference. For a group with different interests, it can help to compare preferences early on and then decide which experiences should shape your plans.
