Mbuyu Popo and the marine world of Matemwe
Accommodation in Mbuyu Popo
In the vicinity of Mbuyu Popo, there are two different ways to experience the marine landscape: Matemwe Beach, with its tides, and boat trips to Mnemba Atoll. This is a useful guide when planning your holiday days, whether you would rather explore the coast and reef or spend half a day on the water.
Matemwe Beach in the rhythm of the tides
Matemwe Beach is a long stretch of white sand lined with palm trees, with casuarinas and villages of coral-stone houses behind it. A shallow fringing reef runs parallel to the coast. At low tide, broad reef flats are exposed; at high tide, the lagoon between the beach and reef forms a sheltered turquoise pool. The coral gardens off Matemwe Beach offer an opportunity to snorkel at high tide. The beach, reef and lagoon therefore take on different forms depending on the water level.
The reef and boat trips to Mnemba
The outer reef of Mnemba Atoll can be reached by boat from Matemwe or Nungwi and explored by snorkelling or diving. The marine protected area around Mnemba is accessible to snorkellers and divers on day trips. Landing on the island is not possible.
Most tours to Mnemba Atoll last half a day and include the return boat transfer, a briefing by a guide and snorkelling equipment. Included services may vary by provider. The boat ride from the Matemwe coast to Mnemba takes about 15 to 20 minutes each way; actual journey times may vary. This estimate refers to the one-way crossing, not the entire half-day trip.
In Matemwe, Matemwe Bungalows and Blue Infinity Diving offer PADI courses as well as daily boat dives to the channels of Mnemba and the northern reef systems. This means that, in addition to snorkelling at Matemwe Beach, organised diving is another distinct activity available in the area.
Seasonal observations and choosing accommodation
Between October and March, whale sharks pass through the waters off northern Zanzibar. Sightings near Mnemba are reported every season. This is a seasonal indication of possible wildlife sightings, not a guarantee that you will see one on any particular trip.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Mbuyu Popo, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on during your holiday. If you are mainly interested in Matemwe Beach, the beach, tides and snorkelling at high tide are the main attractions. If you are more interested in a boat trip, you can plan Mnemba as a separate day out focused on the reef and diving. The two points of reference are different: Matemwe Beach represents the coastal landscape, while Mnemba is a reef area reached by boat. If you are planning a tour, check current boat options and the services offered by the provider in advance.
