Lushoto combines the history of the town with hikes and multi-day trekking routes. In town, tours visit buildings from the German colonial era; nearby, routes lead through Magamba Rainforest and to historic royal villages. The excursions also vary considerably in duration: a Town Tour lasts two to three hours, while other tours are designed to span several days. When planning, consider whether you mainly want to learn about the town’s history or set aside time for longer routes and cultural sites.

Town History and Colonial-Era Buildings

The two- to three-hour Lushoto Town Tour visits old buildings from the German colonial era and introduces the history of the town. It can be combined with a visit to the colourful Lushoto Market. This combination is scheduled for Sundays and Thursdays; check in advance whether the tour is available on your travel date.

Several colonial-era buildings in Lushoto are still in use. These include the former District Office and the historic post office from 1913. The surrounding valleys of the Usambara Mountains also contain imposing European-style residences dating from the plantation era. The town buildings and the houses in the valleys are distinct settings in the region’s history.

Hikes to Historic Sites

A hike through Magamba Rainforest passes a historic royal village of the Kilindi, the Washambaa ruling clan, on the way back. An old German bunker, dug during the First World War, is also on the return route. The route thus combines the rainforest with two sites associated with different chapters of history.

A two- to three-day trek from Lushoto passes Rangwi Monastery and continues to a Kilindi village and the residence of a Shambaa sub-chief. There, you can learn more about the history of the Usambara chiefdom. A multi-day trek from Lushoto also includes an overnight stay at Rangwi Monastery. The durations make clear the difference between a tour of several hours around town and a tour that includes an overnight stay, without implying that the two offer the same itinerary.

An uphill footpath from Lushoto leads to the royal village of Kwembago. There, you can learn more about the cultural history of the traditional ruling clan, the Kilindi; from the village, there are views of Lushoto and the Maasai Plains. Another hike starts in Soni and passes through the villages of Shashui and Kwemula to Kwamongo Peak, also known as “God’s Peak.” The peak is known for its multicoloured butterflies and views of Lushoto and the Handeni Plains. The routes therefore differ both in their starting points and in the destinations described. Check local conditions before setting out on the hike from Soni.

Excursions from Soni and Other Experiences

On a visit to the Montessori Sisters’ Catholic mission in Ubiri, you can discover, sample and buy locally made cheese, wine and jams. Check in advance which products are currently available. The Usambara Farm Tour can, on request, be extended with a hike to 2,100-metre-high Vuli Peak; confirm the route and elevation locally.

The Maweni Spice Tour follows a hiking route from Soni to Maweni Farm, where a garden picnic is planned. Ask locally whether the tour is currently available. The stated starting points can also help you plan your excursions: the Town Tour and the footpath to Kwembago start in Lushoto, while the hikes to Kwamongo Peak and Maweni Farm start from Soni. When choosing a holiday rental, you can take the planned destinations and their respective starting points into account.
