Mpanda offers different perspectives on nature and history. Part of Katavi National Park lies in Mpanda District, where wide plains and miombo woodland meet waterfalls, hiking trails and diverse wildlife. The historic village of Karema offers a different focus. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether hiking and landscapes or cultural history should take centre stage.

Hiking and Waterfalls in Katavi National Park

The hikes described vary in length and time required. The Sitalike Walking Trail is 1 to 9 kilometres long; the hike takes more than three hours. The Chorangwa Hiking Trail is more than 10 kilometres long and takes more than five hours. This information helps you estimate the time needed for each hike without treating their distances as equivalent: Sitalike is described as a route of 1 to 9 kilometres, while Chorangwa is more than 10 kilometres long.

Another trail covers 17 kilometres and leads to an elevated viewpoint. From there, you can see the Chorangwa, Lukima and Ndido waterfalls. The remote waterfalls can also be reached via guided hiking trails. If these experiences are part of your plans, factor the stated hiking times into your daily schedule. Check operating details and current trail conditions before travelling; you can ask TANAPA about the availability of guided hikes.

Plains, Woodland and Wildlife

The landscapes of Katavi National Park include the plains by Lake Chada, Paradise and the Katsunga Plain. Natural landscapes with miombo woodland add to this picture. The waterfalls at Ndido and Chorangwa are also in the park. Open landscapes, woodland and striking waterfalls thus sit side by side—different features that can shape a stay in the park.

Katavi National Park is associated with large groups of hippos, lions, zebras and buffalo. It is also home to large elephants and various bird species. The park is also associated with the male spirit Katabi of the Wabende and a female spirit of the Wamweru. Its character therefore extends beyond landscapes and wildlife to include a local cultural interpretation.

Karema and the Region’s History

Those interested in history will find a different focus in Karema. The historic village in Mpanda District is associated with a history dating back to the arrival of missionaries in 1885. Saint Adrian Atman lived in Karema for 67 years; historic remains there are associated with him. This history can be considered a separate part of the trip, alongside the natural experiences in Katavi National Park.

In connection with Lake Tanganyika, the MV Liemba is also described as an old ship; it was built in 1913.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

For travel by train, Tanzania Railways’ passenger service connects Dar es Salaam, Tabora, Mpanda and Kigoma. If you are considering this connection, check the current timetable before travelling.

When looking for a holiday rental in Mpanda, your preferred focus for the trip can be a useful starting point: the hikes in Katavi National Park require different amounts of time, while Karema offers a historical focus. Consider which of these themes matters most for your stay, and plan your visits accordingly.
