Hai: Nature Experiences and Chagga Culture
Accommodation in Hai
Hai combines natural destinations with experiences centred on movement, crafts and Chagga culture. Chemka Hot Spring is a natural attraction in Chemka village, in Hai District and the Masama Rundugai administrative ward. In Machame, activities range from a two-hour guided bike tour through banana and coffee farms to workshops and storytelling sessions. When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your stay: a clearly defined bike tour, excursions to water and caves, or hands-on and cultural insights.
Nature Destinations and Excursions
An excursion to Nkosalulu Waterfall leads through lush banana plantations. Further afield in the region, a bike tour goes to Kikuletwa Hot Springs, also known as Chemka Hot Springs; visitors can swim in the natural pool there. The two destinations offer different options for an excursion: banana plantations shape the route to the waterfall, while the bike tour to the hot springs includes a swim.
Another hike further afield in the region follows the Mbuguni River. It passes through volcanic rock, bushland and thicket to the Mgonga Chuma Natural Caves. The return route follows the river downstream and continues to Kikuletwa Hot Springs for a swim. This tour therefore combines caves and river scenery with time by the water. The excursions differ in whether the route leads to a waterfall, caves or the hot springs.
Cycling Through Machame
A two-hour guided bike tour starts at the Machame Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism office. It goes through the village and past banana and coffee farms to Village Forest. The stated duration gives this excursion a clear timeframe; along the way, the village and farms are highlights as well as the destination, Village Forest. The tour can therefore be considered a distinct, clearly defined activity.
In Machame, the experiences described also include hands-on insights into local activities. Visitors can take part in a coffee-roasting workshop. A guided tour visits a farm with stingless bees, where guests learn about beehives, sustainable beekeeping methods and honey production. During their stay, guests also have the opportunity to plant a tree with Machame Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism. Check the availability of the tree-planting activity and the details of the bee tour with the provider before travelling.
Crafts and Chagga Stories
In a batik session, visitors create their own patterns using wax and dye, and can take home a piece of batik fabric they have made themselves. The session is offered year-round; confirm availability before travelling. At the weaving activity, guests can watch craftspeople working on traditional looms and try weaving themselves under their guidance. You should also confirm this activity with the provider in advance. The two activities offer different ways to get involved: with batik, you create your own piece of fabric; with weaving, you learn about working on a traditional loom.
Traditional Chagga dances are part of the visitor experience in Machame. Guests can join in and learn dance steps from the performers. During storytelling sessions led by village elders, visitors learn about Chagga folklore; confirm the current details of this village visit in advance. Ntondolo Cave is also connected with Chagga history. A local guide tells stories about the area along local trails. In Machame, visitors can explore the underground Ntondolo Chagga Caves.
Further afield in the region, the Rundugai and Chemka Local Souvenir Center offers handmade souvenirs from the Maasai and Wapare. Visitors can learn how local products are made there. This complements the hands-on activities in Machame with an insight into the production of local souvenirs.
In the Wider Kilimanjaro Destination
Protected areas within the wider Kilimanjaro destination also offer a distinct perspective on the region. The six forest reserves of Kindoroko, Minja, Mramba, Kiverenge, Kamwella I and Kamwella II lie in the North Pare Mountains in Mwanga District; together, they cover 7,407 hectares. Chome Nature Reserve is in the South Pare Mountains in Same District, Kilimanjaro Region.
