Dar es Salaam between museums and islands
Accommodation in Dar es Salaam
Discover Dar es Salaam through two very different themes: Tanzania’s history in museums and the diverse coastal habitats of the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserves System. Between cultural insights and the named islands of the marine protected area, you can shape a trip around very different interests.
Museums with different focuses
Among the region’s visitor attractions are two museums belonging to the National Museum of Tanzania: the National Museum and the Makumbusho Cultural Centre and Village Museum. The National Museum is dedicated to Tanzania’s history. The Makumbusho Cultural Centre and Village Museum focuses on traditional huts from 16 different ethnic groups in Tanzania. The two institutions therefore offer different perspectives: one on the country’s history, the other a close-up look at these groups’ architectural styles.
The Makumbusho Cultural Centre and Village Museum is on the outskirts of the region, along the road to Bagamoyo. Its location is just as useful for orientation as its exhibition theme. Anyone interested in Tanzania’s history will find a dedicated focus at the National Museum; those wishing to see traditional huts from different ethnic groups can visit the Makumbusho Cultural Centre and Village Museum.
Islands and coastal habitats
The Dar es Salaam Marine Reserves System comprises seven islands, including Bongoyo, Pangavini, Fungu Yasin, Mbudya, Makatobe and Kendwa. The coastal landscape is diverse. Fungu Yasin is a sandbank island and marine protected area that is visible only at low tide. Along the shores of the Sinda Islands, rocky cliffs meet sandy beaches.
The coastal habitats around Bongoyo Island include sandy beaches, coral reefs, seagrass meadows, rocky shores, lagoons and algal beds. Different types of coastal landscape can be found side by side, from sandy stretches to reefs and lagoons. Coconut crabs are common on Mbudya Island and feed on coconuts. Swimming and snorkelling are popular activities there.

These specific differences can help you consider in advance which landscapes and themes interest you most.
Choose the focus of your trip
When planning, you can first decide whether to focus on museums and history or on islands and coastal habitats. The museum visits offer two different ways to explore the subject; the island descriptions range from sandy beaches and cliffs to reefs, lagoons and seagrass meadows. If you want to combine several interests, you can use these differences as a guide without reducing every destination to a single holiday theme.
This personal travel focus is also a useful starting point when looking for a holiday apartment: consider which of the themes described matter to your plans, and take your preferred activities into account when choosing a location. That way, your search begins with the experiences that interest you in Dar es Salaam, rather than with a general idea of what accommodation should offer.
