Discover Paternoster
Accommodation in Paternoster
Paternoster combines traditional fishing with art, wildlife watching and walks along the beaches. The changing fishing seasons give the town a distinctive seasonal character: in winter, fishermen head out in traditional wooden boats to catch snoek; in summer, the catch is rock lobster. Galleries and shops display works by local artists. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these aspects of the town you would like to shape your stay.
Fishing, art and village stories
Fishing brings a clear rhythm to the seasons: snoek in winter, rock lobster in summer. This seasonal tradition is especially tangible in the traditional wooden boats. Art is also part of the townscape: galleries and shops feature paintings, sculptures, pottery and photography by local artists. These different interests sit side by side, so you do not have to settle on just one way to explore. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether you would like to focus mainly on the cultural offerings, the wildlife or both.
The name Paternoster and the lighthouse
The name Paternoster derives from the Latin Pater Noster and means “Our Father.” A local legend tells how the slave-trading ship Meermijn came ashore in search of fresh food and water. The Catholic priest on board is said to have prayed the Lord’s Prayer on the beach to give thanks for the supplies they found. The story has been passed down as a legend. Near Paternoster, the Cape Columbine Lighthouse was built on Castle Rock in 1936. Its focal plane is 80 metres above high water, giving the lighthouse a prominent place in the town’s history.
Wildlife and activities in the area
Whales and dolphins can be spotted in Paternoster almost all year round. The town is also part of South Africa’s Whale Route. Birdlife includes the endangered Black Oystercatcher and more than 250 other species; species counts and conservation status can change. Seals and penguins can also be spotted. Walks take you along the beaches and between the boulders. These experiences offer different ways to spend your time: you can focus on wildlife watching or take in the coastal landscape on foot.
The nearby Cape Columbine Nature Reserve offers opportunities for hiking, fishing, birdwatching, diving and kayaking, as well as a beach campsite. The reserve was declared a nature reserve in December 1973. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can also take the surrounding area into account and weigh up whether you would like to focus on beach walks, art in town or activities in the reserve. The activities listed offer different ideas for your holiday days, without prescribing any particular order.
Seasons and travel interests
The West Coast region also offers a seasonal perspective: the wildflower season there runs from August to October, although the exact timing can vary from year to year. The region is home to 1,200 native plant species. These regional details complement the picture of Paternoster’s own natural attractions, but do not apply to the town alone. When planning your travel dates, you can weigh up your different interests in the coast, wildlife watching and regional plant life.
