Rheenendal combines culinary discoveries with places to visit in and around the Knysna Forest. At the Portland Mini Market, you’ll find locally grown produce, homemade preserves and freshly baked goods, as well as provisions for a forest picnic. Totties Farm Kitchen serves breakfast, tea and lunch in a rural garden setting. This gives you different ways to spend the day: pick something up for a picnic or sit down for a meal. Check the latest details of the offerings before your visit.

Picnics and history nearby

The Millwood picnic spot lies in a grassy clearing near the former mining settlement of Millwood. A short-lived gold rush took place there in the 1880s. The clearing and the settlement’s history offer two different reasons to visit: time outdoors and a specific historical connection. The gold rush belongs to the past; it does not describe how the site is used today.

Walking trails of different lengths

Nearby, the Circles in the Forest Trail starts at Krisjan-se-Nek. The trail passes ferns of the Knysna Forest and old yellowwood, stinkwood and white pear trees. There is a 3.1-kilometre route graded easy to moderate, as well as the longer 9-kilometre Woodcutters Trail. The difference in distance helps you choose: the shorter loop and the route almost three times as long offer different scales for a day’s walk, without assuming how long either will take.

At Jubilee Creek, also nearby, an easy circular walk follows Millwood Creek. It is 3.6 kilometres long and leads to a waterfall and a rock pool where swimming is possible. The route is slightly longer than the 3.1-kilometre walk on the Circles in the Forest Trail, but is rated easy rather than easy to moderate. This may help you choose between two short walking options. There are also designated picnic spots on the grassy banks of the forest stream. Check current conditions before visiting.

More challenging outings and special destinations

For a more active option, the nearby Homtini Mountain Bike Trail offers a 19-kilometre circular route that starts and ends at Krisjan-se-Nek and includes a challenging four-kilometre climb. This makes it quite different from the walking trails: the focus here is a longer mountain-bike ride and a specific climb.

The descent to the rock pools of the Homtini River at Drupkelders is another physically demanding option. The trail is steep and two kilometres long; agility and fitness are required. A permit is needed for the walk, and no more than twelve people may take part at a time. Check the current arrangements in advance. These requirements make Drupkelders a different proposition from the shorter walks described above.

There is also a restored model railway at Totties Farm Kitchen. Train rides are offered on Sundays, weather permitting; confirm that it is operating before you travel. This adds another activity at the same location as the dining options, without requiring you to plan a full day of hiking.

Choose the right focus for your stay

When choosing a holiday apartment in Rheenendal, your decision may depend on which experiences you want to focus on: local produce and farm-style cuisine, a short walk, a longer forest trail or a challenging outing. The options listed differ in specific ways, including distance, difficulty and activity. Millwood also offers a historical connection, while Jubilee Creek combines a walk, waterfall, rock pool and picnic spots. These differences can help you decide what kind of days you want, without treating the destinations or their demands as interchangeable.
