Augrabies Falls, Upington’s Palm Avenue and the red dunes of the Kalahari Red Dune Route showcase different sides of Siyanda. In Keimoes, other highlights include a reconstructed waterwheel and wine tastings; in Kenhardt, the San Trail leads to San rock engravings. When choosing a holiday destination, these specific experiences are a useful starting point: Which landscape, local feature or activity would you like to shape your trip?

Waterfall and landscape

Augrabies Falls is a waterfall in the Kai!Garib Municipality, a Local Municipality within the Siyanda District Municipality. In the wider destination of the Northern Cape, Augrabies Falls plunges 56 metres into an 18-kilometre-long gorge. Augrabies Falls National Park lies on the banks of the Orange River.

The Kalahari Red Dune Route offers a different landscape: red sand dunes and dry riverbeds define it, and Upington is one of its main centres. The waterfall and gorge contrast with the dunes and riverbeds. If landscape is your main consideration, you could start by thinking about which of these scenes appeals to you most.

Local highlights and experiences

Upington’s Palm Avenue is 1,041 metres long and features more than 200 date palms planted nine metres apart. It is one of the longest and densest palm avenues in the Southern Hemisphere. Its length, number of trees and planting distance give this local landmark an unusually specific scale.

A reconstructed waterwheel is in operation on Main Road in Keimoes. Wine tastings and tours are offered at the Orange River Wine Cellars Co-operative. If you plan to take a wine tour or tasting, check availability before travelling.

In Kenhardt, the San Trail is an exclusive guided tour through several hills featuring San rock engravings. Its guided format and rock art make it a different kind of experience from Upington’s Palm Avenue: here, the focus is a tour through hilly terrain, while there, it is a clearly defined local landmark.

Choosing the right focus

Upington is connected to most parts of the country by air and road. Check current connections and timetables for your specific trip. You can also choose your holiday destination based on the experiences that matter to you: Upington combines the connections mentioned above with Palm Avenue, Keimoes with its waterwheel and wine offerings, and Kenhardt with the guided San Trail. This gives you a way to start looking for a holiday rental that matches your personal travel interests.

The Northern Cape as a wider destination

The wider destination of the Northern Cape offers other nature experiences too. At Witsand Nature Reserve, geological and climatic conditions make the desert sand “roar”. Three vegetation types from arid regions and bushveld meet there, attracting more than 170 bird species.
